Did you insert the stacking module on the second one while it was already booted-up?

"stacking enable" might help. This os on by default if you boot it up with a stack module inserted, but if you boot it up with no stack module, it sets itself to disable.

    Thank you Vince.

To give you more clarity, the switches were in stacking mode before, we did a firmware upgrade and the secondary switch seemed to have a old firmware, which we were not able to trace when we did "#show version" in the cli mode.

when we did a reload the secondary switch not be coming up, and the stacking is right now not working, we later did "stacking enable" which showed us that stacking is Active but the secondary switch seems not to be up. Any idea ? and the stack ports are showing as Inactive.

I have not used stacking with HP switches, but in our Aruba stacks all member MUST be running the same software version. If not, the member with older software is set as Inactive. The solution then is to remove it from the stack, upgrade the inactive member and have it rejoin the stack.
