3810 not recognizing JL083A module

I ordered and received multiple 3810 (JL073) switches, JL083A modules, and J9150D transceivers. Switches will not recognize modules/transceivers. Show modules and show tech transceivers yield empty results. Show interfaces does show A1-A4 interfaces. Switches are on latest firmware (KB_16_11_0012). Flexible-module A type JL083A also set. What am I missing here?

Have you rebooted the switch after inserting the port module?

Unless you've previously used an appropriate 'module' configuration plus reboot, restarting the switch is required for activating an inserted module.

Thank you. I have restarted multiple times. I should have stated that as well. I'm really starting to wonder if all are bad. It took over a year to receive the JL083 modules, so I'm really hoping that's not the case.

Hmm - are you seeing the module 1 type JL083 line in the config file?

Otherwise, can you see if adding that line and rebooting does anything?

I do see that line in the config. It was one of my first commands after install. Rebooted several times. The sh modules command still comes up empty. I'm starting to think I waited a year for three bad modules.

OK - this is where I'd contact support. The module command explains why you can dry configure the ports, but apparently the modules aren't detected at all.

On (somewhat) similar modular switches I know well (2910al), the modules config line is inserted automatically and modules start working after a reboot - without any manual configuration.

If you've inserted the modules line before rebooting, I'd remove the hardware module again, remove the config line, reboot, reinsert hardware and reboot once more. Perhaps that manual config line somehow prevented the correct line to be added (just a wild guess).

    Hello Tim,

you have a supported combination of switch and modules (JL073A and JL083A), so the modules should work and get recognised.
Do you see any LED activity on the JL083A module? If yes which LED is on and with what color?

There are no lights on the module. I would think the bottom right power light would be on. Nothing. However, the show interfaces command does list A1-A4. Maybe that's due to my adding the module type?

Hi! it would be interesting to see if physically removing the JL083A Module and defaulting (if possible) the switch configuration (thus starting from scratch with a default factory - clean - configuration) the module JL083, once seated again into the Chassis, will be recognized after the required reboot or not (the show logging -r CLI command should show you what's going on while seating the Module, as example).

Here I'm imply that you can change the Switch running configuration to factory default (reset) and that your switch is really running on the booted KB.16.11.0012 software build.

Thanks for responding. I tried these steps. I factory reset the switch (confirmed KB.16.11.0012). I then reinstalled the JL083A module. I see no status lights on the module, no automatic module type listing in the config, and no entries listed in the show modules command. I do notice that show interfaces no longer lists interfaces A1-A4. I suspect that if I manually add the module type command, that these interfaces will appear again. However, it does not appear that the module is being recognized on a clean switch.

    > I do notice that show interfaces no longer lists interfaces A1-A4.

Yes - that reflects the absence of the module command from the config.

    > I suspect that if I manually add the module type command, that these interfaces will appear again.

That's the way it should be. The general intention is to enable configuration of a new module before physically inserting it, and to avoid losing port configurations when a module is temporarily removed/replaced.

    > it does not appear that the module is being recognized on a clean switch.

That's the problem. It sounds like you've got a bad module or rather a bad batch.

    Hi,
Look in logfile for something like this:
Flexible Module JL083A in slot Expansion
Module A is inactive. Flexible Module JL083A does not match
                configured JL078A.
    Have you tryed typing:

flexible-module A type ?  (yes the question mark or tab)

    to check the result:

     JL078A
     JL079A
     JL081A
     JL083A

    then:
    flexible-module A remove
    and then
    flexible-module A type JL083A
    ??
    ps,
Always power off/on, when dealing with flex-modules

    and please provide output from:

    sh modules

    sh interfaces

sh run (first printout only/start "page")

and make note of SwitchLED Indicators

    when powering ON

You need to make a Tac case,

It should been under sh modules
