More precisely, you should use the latest patch release of the LSR (long term support) release, 8.10/ the current version is 8.10.0.7
If you have the resources, there is also Aruba Central On-Prem which uses on premises servers instead of cloud servers. It is the successor to Airwave.
I do not know if AOS 10 works with CoP.

AOS10 needs Aruba Central, yes it is mandatory. So in your case if you dont have/want to use Aruba Central, then you need to go with AOS8.x

Subject: AOS 8 vs AS 10 for on-prem deployment
Hi,
We are looking at deploying an on-premise Aruba WiFi solution with a combination of AP-565 and AP-635 access points with 2 virtual mobility controllers in active passive configuration. We will not be using Aruba Central to manage the APs.
I was thinking of using AOS 10 for the VMCs and APs, and doing some research through documentation, but wasn't able to find a definite answer if Aruba Central was mandatory when running AOS10. Is Aruba Central mandatory when running AOS 110, or can we use AOS 10 without it? Or will I need to run AOS 8?
Thanks
