  • 1.  AP205 Amber 2.4GHz light, lost connections

    Posted Feb 03, 2021 11:06 AM
I have a single 205 that periodically drops all clients and displays a solid amber 2.4GHz light. The only way to restore connections is to reboot.  I thought perhaps it was bad, so I swapped it out for another 205 I had, but the replacement did the same thing.  If it matters, this is the only of my access points that is set up as  Mesh point, and it is the only one that is powered by DC rather than PoE.  Could it be power-supply related? What else should I check?

According to the guide, if the radio led of 2.4GHz is on -amber , it means 2.4GHz radio enabled in non-HT Wlan mode.

Below is the power specifics of AP205 for your reference.
    • Maximum (worst-case) power consumption: 12.5 watts
    (PoE) or 11.7 watts (DC)
    • Maximum (worst-case) power consumption in idle mode:
8.4 watts (PoE) or 7.7 watts (DC)
    • Direct DC source: 12 Vdc nominal, +/- 5%
    • Power over Ethernet (PoE): 48 Vdc (nominal)
    802.3af-compliant source
    • Power sources sold separately
    • When both power sources are available, DC power takes priority

Yes, I read that, but I wasn’t sure what that means. In particular, what is “non-HT Wlan mode,” why would the radio be in that mode, and why would this correlate to no clients being able to connect to the WAP on either radio?

You can refer to https://community.arubanetworks.com/browse/articles/blogviewer?blogkey=d042781e-9eab-48e3-8c87-814dc28a322f  for what is "non-HT Wlan mode" and some configuration info.
You can check your settings first.

One reason for having amber LED on 2.4 GHz is when you have WEP enabled for security. WEP is broken and known insecure, and for that reason, in the 11n standard, it is defined that SSIDs should not use WEP encryption. When you enable WEP, the radio will fallback to 11b/g (max 54 Mbps) and the LED will indicate like that.

There is one SSID on this AP, and it uses WPA2-AES with 802.1x authentication.

What I'm having trouble understanding is that it works fine for a period of anywhere from a few minutes to a few days (sometimes a week or more), then suddenly all connections are dropped, we lose signal in that portion of the building, and the amber light comes on.
