  • 1.  Aruba 2930 VSF stack firmware update problems

    Posted 30 days ago

    Hello all,

    we do have a vsf chain of  JL254A (2930F-48) and JL253A (2930F-24).

    Flash primary WC.16.11.0023 - flash secondary WC.16.11.0021 - rom WC.16.01.0010

We could not update firmware viea Web (Signature invalid) nor we could not upgrade via tftp (no errors, but "show flash" does not change.

If we look in Web Stack overview and reports Software Version WC.16.11.0019 - so I'm total confused!

How we could successfully upgrade our 2930F vsf Stack upgrade to newest firmware?

    Best Regards,

    Matthias

Hello Matthias, please post the outputs of the commands below:

    • show version
    • show flash
    • verify signature flash primary
    • verify signature flash secondary
    • show vsf <-- do sanitize/hide the MAC Addresses of VSF Members (the VSF MAC Address is partly generated)

Updating the Software Flash shoud be quite simple (provided that the Switch Commander is able to reach a TFTP Server, as example) - WC.16.11.0024 is the latest:

copy tftp flash <TFTP-Server-IP-Address> WC_16_11_0024.swi primary (to copy into the Primary Flash area)

    alternatively:

copy tftp flash <TFTP-Server-IP-Address> WC_16_11_0024.swi secondary (to copy into the Secondary Flash area)

or, if the OoBM port is used to connect to the TFTP Server instead of any of the Frontplane ports, use:

copy tftp flash <TFTP-Server-IP-Address> WC_16_11_0024.swi oobm primary (to copy into the Primary Flash area)

    alternatively:

copy tftp flash <TFTP-Server-IP-Address> WC_16_11_0024.swi oobm secondary (to copy into the Secondary Flash area)

Primary or Secondary will be the Flash Area to be booted at next reboot with:

boot system flash primary (if Primary Flash area was flashed with the new SWI software imager)

    alternatively:

boot system flash secondary (if Secondary Flash area was flashed with the new SWI software image)

Once the VSF stack reboots perform the post-upgrade checks with the provided set of CLI commands.

If all is good (the VSF Commander election has been executed and the VSF Stack is fully operational and well formed) you can then decide to pair the Primary and Secondary Flash areas with:

copy flash flash secondary (if the Primary Flash area was the one flashed and it is now the one updated, Secondary will be flashed)

    alternatively:

copy flash flash primary (if the Secondary Flash area was the one flashed and it is now the one updated, Primary will be flashed)

    Hello Parnassus,

below you would find outputs of commands above.

When I try to upload via copy tftp transfer works successfully. After upload check with "show flash" that primary or secondary got updated with no success and no error message appeared.

    Best Regards,

    Matthias

then it looks like the Primary Flash area was correctly flashed with WC.16.11.0023 and, probably an action done previously, the Secondary Flash area was flashed with WC.16.11.0021... BUT the VSF Stack is still running on WC.16.11.0019 with an uptime of 218 days (so no reboot was done during the latest 218 days...).

To apply the new software WC.16.11.0023 (which is already flashed on the Primary Flash area) you need to find a proper maintenance window (expect few minutes of downtime for the entire VSF Stack since it needs to perform a full reboot) and you must command the VSF to reboot (selecting the Primary as proposed) with:

    boot system flash primary

Once the VSF stack reboots perform the usual post-upgrade checks with the set of CLI commands initially suggested.

If all is good (the VSF Commander election has been executed and the VSF Stack is fully operational and well formed) you can then decide to pair the Primary and Secondary Flash areas with:

copy flash flash secondary (the Primary Flash area is the one flashed, updated and booted and will be copied into the Secondary)

    Good Morning Parnasus,

last night I got a maintenance window to restart 2930F stack and boot from flash primary successfully.

    Now stack reports 16.11.0023 ;)

Thank you very much for your help!

    Best Regards,

    Matthias
