  • 1.  Aruba 6200F USB-C console access failure

    Posted Aug 25, 2023 10:13 AM

We have a JL727A 6200F 48G switch, which will not allow access over the USB-C connection. I have accessed over the management port and done a minimal config with a static IP. Can access switch over SSH and the GUI but not console. Anyone had something similar? Using putty with the correct COM port. We have several of this model and all others are ok for console access. Just thought to see if anything can be done before logging issue with HPE.

    Thanks in advance

    Hi

can you be a bit more precise with "not allow access over the USB-C connection"? Does the serial connection with PuTTY establish and then just not show anything (as if there is no sync or bad baud rate configured or the tty on the switch failed) or does it end up with an error message? I hope you are connecting with a baud rate of 115200 and are aware that COM ports usually change when hopping from one switch to another switch with the cable.

And no ... never had a similar issue. I use this type of connection quite a lot.

    Regards,
    Thomas

    Hi Thomas,

The serial connection establishes but does not accept keyboard input at the logon prompt or before booting the image. When connected via USB-C on the correct COM port at 115200, I have rebooted the switch and can see it goes through the boot process and the boot up is displayed normally, no obvious errors that is. When it gets to the logon prompt and I try to input credentials the cursor is flashing but no input from the keyboard. I have tried to boot off the secondary image during the initial boot but keyboard input is ignored and boots off the primary. We have quite a number of aruba switches and this is the only one exhibiting this "fault". Just thought someone may have had a similar issue and it was an easy fix rather than raising the swap out with HPE. Many thanks for your very quick response.

    Thanks & regards

    Eddie

I'm having the same issue with a 6200M switch. Have USBA serial cable which is then converted to USBC, I can see the bootup screen post. But once at login I can't enter my user credentials or input anything from the keyboad.

    1. Has this issue been fixed?
    2. What serial to usbC cable is recommended?

I would recommend to use the USB-C console port (5 in the image below) and use a regular/standard USB cable, not a USB-to-serial one. So a similar cable that you would use to charge/connect your phone to your computer, assuming your phone has USB-C.

If you have a USB to Serial Cable, make sure it has an RJ45 connector and use port 8 (RJ-45 console port).

If you can't enter anything, it can be a broken cable where the transmit from your computer to the port is broken, but more likely is hardware/software flow control which I would disable if you see such issues.

i had issues like this with a 6300M and a 6400 series chassis. What worked for me was using a USB(A) to USB (C) cable, instead of that is "C" on both ends. My laptop was not picking up the connection until i changed to the other cable type
