  • 1.  Aruba central Groups

    Posted Aug 24, 2023 11:18 AM

Hello good morning, I would like to ask if anyone has had the opportunity to create groups in Aruba central, I understand that the integration can be of Access Points equipment, Switches, Gateways, only I have doubts if for best practices I should only put Switches with swicthes, aps with aps and gateways with gateways, or I can add all my equipment to the same group without running the risk of losing configurations with my equipment. (?)

I would also like to know if I can integrate a group of switches with AOS-S and AOS-CX switches, as I was recommended to add the AOS-S switches in a group configuring them using template to don't lost configurations, but I would like to add them all without using template to enjoy the graphical interface that aruba central offers.

I have had no issues having the same group for AP/Switches/Gateways. I don't think there is any best practice for it. Its your preference and how it'll make your operational tasks easier.

In regards to template based groups, even though you can have one group for APs/Switches/Gateways and then select template approach for the combinations, i have not tried it. So far what i have done is if there is a requirement for template based group for switches say, I would have a group just for that

and you can have one template group for AOS-S and CX switches. The screenshot below is the next screen from the previous post.

Then in the same group you add 2x templates one for each type of switch (CX and Aruba switch)

Aruba Switch is AOS-S switches like 2930F/5406R, etc.

Thank you very much for your answers @ariyap, I understand that part, I just wanted to keep myself informed that no error will happen with the configurations that have the equipment when they are uploaded to Aruba central, just to perform my operational tasks more easily. makes me a better idea to consider the creation of a single group and put all the switches, are about 10-15, 5 AOS-CX and 10 AOS-S, I just have the doubt if the configuration of these switches is affected as soon as all these switches are uploaded to Aruba central or respect the configuration commands as they are?

Previously, I only used templates for 3810 switches (AOS-S) that work as CORE and a group for each switch, but it is a bit time-consuming to enter and exit from one group to another.

Thank you very much, If you know if the settings are respected regardless of the operating system of the switches would be very helpful, again Thank you because with kindness and experience, you interacted in this case, As soon as I have better information about this settings and I will show results.

Howdy! I've been messing with central for about 4 months now with 0 experience in networking (i've learned quite a lot since then), I have 500+ 2930s/6300 and 8 8325s with 400+ APs that are still needing to be moved. My personal experience, I've made my groups with each model device, as to not segment it too much, but also have a little bit. Then I download the config, and MAKE SURE TO HAVE AUTO COMMIT OFF!!!!! I've moved a core onto central and was confused for about 2 hours as it wiped it lol.... But if you have auto commit off, and within the UI group of the switch, setup the config exactly how it is, and apply config. You'll be just fine!

Also, I few more notes I learned i'm not sure what all you know:

Do not overwrite local overrides. Each group (of course) is DHCP on the vlans. You go into the switch and apply static IP on the vlan. The local over ride is it trying to apply the dhcp from the group/any other configs you've changed at the switch level.

Good luck on your journey with central! It's a lot to learn lol

Hello, thank you very much MojoPBS for the contribution, the main question that arose was whether uploading it in the non-template mode would have some variations in the configurations, but thanks to your example I think not, I appreciate the way you did it, segment each group by the model it sounds clever, also thank you very much for the recommendation I will take it into account, really thanks

My 2cts... Groups determine the configuration in Central. So devices that share the same configuration, are good candicates to be in the same group.

Further, if you combine switches + APs + gateways on the same location/network, it would make sense for me to put all in the same group.

If you have devices in template and in UI groups, or managed and monitored-only, AOS8 and AOS10, those need to be in different groups.

My preference would be to put everything in a single group, unless you have a reason to deviate from that. And such a reason can also be that it looks better or is a personal preference.

Thank you very much for the answer @Herman Robers, your comment was very helpful to me, now that I understand that the groups determine the configuration in central, I have a question, in this case (my case) each device has a personalized configuration, although all the devices they share the same base, there are ports configured for each VLAN, access, trunk, do you think the configuration will be it be affected if I make a single group and put all the devices in?
Also mentioned with ariyab, there are about 10-15, 5 AOS-CX and 10 AOS-S

In the previous case, we created a site and within it a group for each switch, but it is more complicated for me to do it since every time I want to enter a device I have to enter and re-enter another device, but I have my doubts about that the configuration is affected when uploading all the devices in the same group

Likewise, my preference is to put everything in a single group, since it is easier for me to enter a single group and visualize the all devices than to enter each group of each device, I just want to make an informed decision on it, really thanks for your help and support
I will also contact the TAC of Aruba, only that it was interesting for me to share my doubts and that it may be useful in the future for another person, really thank you, I will inform you of the solution that has been taken as well as its stability
