    Hello,

I  need to connect two Aruba 2930F switches between buildings.  The company that ran our fiber said we need to get single mode SFP, and this is what they recommended.

I just want to make sure this will work on the switches.  Do I need to enter this command on the switch?  The SFP is Aruba compatible.

I have the very switches "stacked" across the building with J9150D using OM4 fiber

Technically speaking IF the fiber optic cable between buildings is a Single Mode Fiber (SMF) AND its length is more than 300 meters, why not moving data at 10Gbps (instead of 1Gbps) using a pair of Aruba 10G SFP+ LC LR 10km SMF Transceiver SKU J9151E, those are LR = Long Range (up to 10km) and for SMF Single Mode Fiber...I imply that the budget to purchase two J9151E (instead of purchasing a pair of J4859D) is not an issue...

    Insert the SFP and :

    show interface transceiver

If you get something like :

    Aruba-2930F-24G-PoEP-4SFPP# sho inter transceiver

    Transceiver Technical Information:

                         Product Serial Part
     Port Type Number Number Number
     ------- ----------- ------------ ------------------ ----------
     25 1000SX J4858C MY60GY64YZ 1990-4395

Then the SFP is fully compatible and may be used for uplinks and (eventually) stacking.

If you get this kind of output :

    Aruba-2930F-24G-PoEP-4SFPP# sho inter transceiver

    Transceiver Technical Information:

                         Product Serial Part
     Port Type Number Number Number
     ------- ----------- ------------ ------------------ ----------
     25 ?? ?? unsupported

The following transceivers have extra information:
     Port # Message
     -------- -------------------------------------
Port 25 Transceiver type not supported in this port.

Then it's not supported (TYPE is unknown)

Try activating the extra supprt :

    Aruba-2930F-24G-PoEP-4SFPP(config)# allow-unsupported-transceiver
Warning: The use of third-party transceivers is at your own risk and
may void support and warranty. Please see HPE Warranty terms and conditions.
Do you agree, and do you wish to continue enabling? (Y/N) y

    If you get :

    Aruba-2930F-24G-PoEP-4SFPP(config)# sho inter transceiver

    Transceiver Technical Information:

                         Product Serial Part
     Port Type Number Number Number
     ------- ----------- ------------ ------------------ ----------
     25 * 1000LX ?? unsupported

    * third-party transceiver

Then you MAY use the SFP as uplink interface (but not stacking)., because the type is correct.

Anyway, the key is to test before putting in production.

The FS compatible reference J4859D is correct.

You should have no problem using it.

Thanks everyone.  I would like to get 10G between buildings but the factor is the cost.

Plus because the ports are SFP not SFP+

I believe SFP can do from 1 GB to max 4 GB.  Only SFP+ does 10 GB right?

I have the SFP from FS.com plugged in, and the switch sees it, so it should be good, and I don't need to enable 3rd party SFP.

    Hi

"Plus because the ports are SFP not SFP+"

I'm sorry about that, it was a pity not being able to go at 10G given the deployed fiber optic cable...but, ehi, you never explicitly wrote that you were dealing with an Aruba 2930F SKU not supporting SFP+ (like JL259A, JL260A, JL262A, etc.), one can't guess it so easily ;-) .

Yeah, sorry about that.  All of the existing and the new ones are 2930F family.

I'll definitely buy 10Gb switches when we do a network equipment refresher.

Really a pity that same overall model name is used for so many sub-models with quite different specs

It's quite common IMHO, other vendors do the same (indeed we refer to a Switch series which is capable to include various models with different hardware features: non-PoE, PoE, PoE+, ruggidized versus non-ruggidized, dual PSUs, modular or not, SFP on uplinks or SFP+, MACsec or not, etc.). Always do a check reading Datasheets and QuickSpecs to be sure what you are going to purchase with a particular SKU of a particular Switch series.

The AOS-S and AOS-CX Transceiver guide may help you in finding the right transceiver for a specific switch model, or compatible switch models for a specific transceiver.
