Prepping to turn up several hundred new APs in a site. Anyone know the default number of allowed simultaneous AP joins per-controller? Maybe there is no limit other then bandwidth.  Customer looking to gauge time-frame for cut-over.  We will do some testing but just wanted to check.

I know AP Pre-Download is default to 10 simultaneously and user configurable...  but that is a different scenario.

I don't know if there is a limit, i think it's going to depend on how traffic like you mentioned, but I don't think you'll have much of a problem. What model APs? Each model takes a bit different time for boot process, so if you have an AP-325 for example:

    - the AP takes about 5 minutes to boot
    - then when it finds the controller, it needs to potentially complete the CPSEC process (if enabled) which forces another reboot
    - it then will do a code check/upgrade to match the controller's code, which is another reboot
    - finally they need to be provisioned into an AP group (if not pre-configured or if default doesn't have SSIDs enabled - best practice), so another reboot for that.

All-in-all, it's likely about 20-25 minutes total for groups of APs from fresh out of the box install to broadcasting SSIDs. I think the longest part is going to be provisioning based on number of AP groups.

    Hopefully that helps.

    I appreciate the response Michael!

Yes, all of those things have been timed and prepped. We just were not sure if we could have 10 go simultaneously or 400! (Again depending on Bandwidth).

Don't forget you can also use the AP Provisioning rules to automate and improve the efficiency of the process as well. You can auto provision an AP as part of the installation process (code upgrade/cpsec) and re-direct the AP to the required AP Group.

    Thanks Craig!

Yes, all that is in order. Provisioning is a nice feature! We take it one step further and use the cpsec whilelist feature. We label and scan each AP MAC while it is still in the box. We then import the list of all the MAC addresses with names associated. Hand them off to installers whom mount them based on survey locations. When they boot they get all the benefits of AP provisioning but also get automatically named.
