  • 1.  Conversion of CAP to IAP

    Posted Sep 15, 2023 04:03 AM

    Hi,

Is there a process for converting CAP devices to IAP on a 7200 controller runing AOS 8.10.x.x? Can someone explain what we would expect to see and how long the conversion takes per device - I expect as soon as we run the command and conversion successful we should see the device disappear from the controller and appear on Aruba Central?

    Regards

    Adrian

Have you tried this process. Host the IAP file (replace with the one you want) on a tftp server and run the following:

    ap convert add ap-name <ap-name>
    ap convert active specific-aps server tftp <Server IP> ArubaInstant_Hercules_8.6.0.7_78215  no-pre-validation
Pretty sure this takes around 10-15 minutes, and if it is in your central inventory and assigned a license, it should automatically come up in central.

You can use the instructions for loading AOS 10 as a guide, the process is basically the same for loading IAP.

    https://www.arubanetworks.com/techdocs/VSG/docs/200-companion-guides/080-campus-companions/010-aos10-adoption-technote/aos10-adoption-000/

Note, this process is only supported for APs that are converted for being managed under Central.  CAPs converted to IAP and then managed other than through Central are not supported and TAC will behave as such.

    Thanks all.

We have a large number to do – 300 + - probably in batches.

How is best to do this and the timeframes? Many are CAPs so do they need to be converted to Unified APs before IAPs?

My requirement now is just to ascertain how long it would take me to convert the APs.

Also, can they remain on the same AOS (8.10.0.7) or does the new image need to be 8.6.x.x – I may have misread a reference to IAPs being on 8.6 or an old document somewhere as it's easy to find older than newer

    Thanks in advance.

Conversion to UAP isn't possible.  Time required will be dependent on how you deliver the firmware image to the APs but plan on at least 45 minutes for the AP to be converted and show up in Central.  When converting CAP to IAP you can choose any supported version of IAP firmware as the target, I'd highly recommend 8.10 or newer.

Make sure to take a look at the AOS 10 Adoption Guide portion of the VSG, you'll need to follow the flow presented for conversion of CAP to AOS 10 as a guide.
