  • 1.  CX6400 Dual Management Slots - Software Upgrade

    Posted Dec 09, 2021 08:11 AM
    Hi all,
Can anyone point me to a guide which shows how to upgrade a CX 6405 with dual management slots?
I understand that I can't do hitless upgrades (yet), but I still want to document the correct procedure.
    Thanks!

    Hi Starsky,

You can use the release notes of your desired SW version. Under "Upgrade information" you will find the procedure of how to upgrade the switch SW - the process is the same as with one MM, nothing special.

If you are overriding the active image, which is currently in use (primary/secondary), the process will override the used image by the standby MM and there will be no redundant functionality until the next reboot (reboot will be required to load into the new SW as well).

If you are just downloading the sw to a non active image (primary/secondary), there will be redundancy, but you will still need to boot into the newly downloaded image to finish the update.

Regarding the hitless upgrades - I am not aware of such functionality. If this is implemented, it will be announced in the release notes, or with the new branch SW features.

PS: Don't forget about the "allow-unsafe-updates", if there are any required updates. This step is already mentioned in release notes in the same upgrade section. More info: https://community.arubanetworks.com/community-home/digestviewer/viewthread?MID=33772

    Thanks for your reply Stanislav.
I followed the steps in the release notes and added one more step of my own to switch to the standby module to make sure the image had copied across.
I also added the 'allow-unsafe-upgrades' command as recommended (30 mins).
However the CX6405 has failed to recover after the upgrade to 10.08
Fortunately this is not yet a production switch, but I'm not on site so I can't check what's happening on the console.
I'll update this ticket next week once I've found out what's going on, just in case it helps anyone else.

Hm.. This is actually strange, because yesterday I tested the steps in my own lab to verify the process before posting in the community - I was able to update a chassis with two MM to Version FL.10.08.1021 without any issues (once downloaded on the active image and second time to a non active).

Which SW version was previous on the switch? The following information is listed in the release notes of 10.08.1021:
"10.06 is the minimum required software version prior to upgrading to 10.08. If your device is using a version of
software prior to 10.06, you must first upgrade to a version of 10.06 before upgrading to 10.08. Check release
notes for the software version you will upgrade to for instructions on performing the upgrade to 10.06."

What did you do in this extra step mentioned above?

Hopefully there was no power outage onsite during the update process.

Ah, that's probably it - it was shipped with 10.05.0001 so who knows what state it's in now?!
Annoying because the release notes for 10.08 refer to a minimum version of 10.04, but I didn't spot the note about upgrading to 10.06 first.
Hopefully I'll be able to revert to the old image on the non-active flash when I'm on site.
Thanks again for your help so far :)

I will paste the link to the release notes to be sure that we are no the same page:
    https://www.arubanetworks.com/techdocs/AOS-CX/10.08/RN/rn_6300-6400_10-08-1021.pdf

It is a bit confusing, but after some brainstorming: Page 7/ "Minimum supported software versions" - this is related to the particular HW. It means the minimum version for the HW (there are some SFP modules as well) for its proper functionality (for example you have to install 10.04.2000 in order to use module R0X44A/ SFP28). The other requirement (update from minimum 10.06 version) is listed under "important information" page 4.

Unfortunately I cannot confirm you what to expect (like possible bootloop) or even to confirm if this is the cause, but I think you should be able to restore the operation via console connection (booting the switch with the other image on the flash primary/secondary). You can even use ServiceOS for downloading a new image to the switch as your last option (usb or tftp).

Thanks - I'll let you know how it goes

I was pleased to find that, apart from a few outstanding modules, the upgrade was actually successful. Although the 6405 came up on it's secondary Management Module and I don't yet have physical connectivity to that.
I guess that begs another question. How do I set a priority on the Management Modules? The High Availability guide for 6400 10.08 doesn't seem to help.

    Hi Starsky,

I think that there is no available configuration (to set priorities) for the MM redundancy (or at least for the 6400 switches). In a normal situation the MM in slot 1 will boot earlier and will be considered as "active".
Is MM1 up and running (show modules/show redundancy etc.)?
If both MMs are running - I think that if you reboot the chassis now, it will elect MM1 as active and the module in slot 2 as standby.
