Error installing 6.11.9 update

I installed the 6.11.9 patch on top of a fresh 6.11.1 install (c3000v). The patch "seems" to have been applied, as the web gui shows I'm at version 6.11.9.259693

However my event viewer is showing the error below: Failed with exit status - 143

Anyone else encounter this? Do I need to be concerned?

    Hi,

you are low on diskspace, as I found the same error in another thread.

I don't believe that is the issue for multiple reasons...

    1. Nowhere in the thread you linked to does it reference the error I am receiving (Failed with exit status - 143)
    2. My patch actually installed, whereas the in the link you reference the screenshot shows the upgrade failed.
    3. The linked thread is nearly 6 years old and references a 6.7 upgrade; I'm working on 6.11 code.
    4. The linked thread error references a failure to complete a backup; my installer didn't have this issue.
    5. I installed the 6.11.9 patch on top of a brand new 6.11.1 build with the recommended system specs (and built via Aruba's OVF). Patch install was also completed before migrating my configuration, Insight database, and Endpoint database. All that to say, I have plenty of free disk space available.

If someone from Aruba can chime in, I'd appreciate it. Again, this was a clean 6.11.1 install from OVF, then installed the 6.11.9 patch on top prior to restoring any backups. The recommended sizing specs for c3000v were used. This is on esxi v8.0.1.

Please open a TAC case, there is no known generic fix for this, nor it seems wide-spread, so needs a more thorough look.

Herman, thanks for your input. I'll get a TAC case opened.

    Hi codye,

I am quite interested in what TAC comes back with. I am similarly updating from 6.11.1 to 6.11.9 shortly (this week), although, this will be after restore for me.

    Thanks in advance!

I'll report what TAC says once I can get the case opened. I'll be curious if you encounter this error when you try to apply the 6.11.9 patch. Are you also applying this on a C3000V platform?

Yes, I am also on the C3000V sizing with a cluster of 3 on VMWare.

@cochranes were you able to successfully apply the 6.11.9 patch? If so, did you go direct from 6.11.1 to 6.11.9? Any issues?

I'm still having issues and trying to work with TAC on this. More details....

After the 6.11.9 patch "seemed to install" (recall my cli and gui report being at 6.11.9) my software update page always displays this error at the top. And this page wont load or show available updates, even though Im signed in with my valid passport account ID, and have had aruba license support verify my username is tied to my platform license and support contracts for the license.

TAC thinks something happened during the install (hence the exit status 143) and that listed file is missing info, but they didn't elaborate anymore. They suggest rolling back the patch, then attempting to re-apply.

Well, before issuing the system patch-rollback command you are supposed to install the rollback patch first. So I downloaded the rollback patch from the support portal, but when I attempt to install it via the Software Updates page, it fails to install (edit: it fails to upload on the Software Updates page, which doesn't give me the opportunity to attempt to install. When I click "Import Updates" button and select the rollback patch, it sits and spins a few seconds trying to upload, then the window disappears without any sign of success or failure, yet the patch isn't listed in the gui for me to be able to click to install - yet the Event View does log an 'import success' message). So now I cant even install the rollback patch to attempt rollback; very frustrating. Waiting to hear next steps from TAC now. Really hope I don't have to rebuild this cluster.

    Hi Codye,

Yes, everything went smoothly. I applied the update late last week and had no issues. I simply went through the built in "Cluster Update" process after downloading the 6.11.9 patch. I realize this doesn't help with your issue. Hopefully TAC comes up with something more helpful.

@cochranes I'm glad to hear your update went smoothly and without issue. Can I ask a few more question, just to try and determine what's similar/dissimilar to how we approached this...

    1. When you built your new 6.11.1 server, did you use the aruba OVF as pictured below? Or did you build from scratch via the ISO?
    2. When you applied the 6.11.9 patch, was this on top of 6.11.1? Or did you first jump to an intermediate version, such as 6.11.7 or 6.11.8?

    Thanks.

Q- When you built your new 6.11.1 server, did you use the aruba OVF as pictured below? Or did you build from scratch via the ISO?

A- We built from the OVA/OVF booting into the basic network and access setup.

Q- When you applied the 6.11.9 patch, was this on top of 6.11.1?

A- I applied it right on top of 6.11.1 as I found no documentation suggesting a step thru or update path.

Additionally, for reference, the update process took what I consider to be a long time, about 45 to an hour. So, i am guessing if there is an update path, it is somehow automated in the backend.

@cochranes thanks for the followup answers. You did everything I did, so I'm still perplexed.

Curious, if you remember: on the software update page where you have to generate a token and enter your support portal credentials to see and install updates/patches via the web gui - did you sign in (and have a successful connection) before installing the 6.11.9 patch? And thus your 6.11.9 patch was obtained this way.

I ask because that could be one difference. In my case, my support status was (and still is) messed up on the backend (separeate ticket open to fix that). So I could not install the 6.11.9 patch via the web gui. Rather I manually downloaded the patch and uploaded/installed it. I did not use the 'cluster upgrade' button.

@codye that would be one delta between the two approaches. Didn't you also say this update attempt is also pre config restore? Not sure how that would complicate the update process more though.

Several months ago, I also had to open a case to solve the same update page issue, post migration to 6.11. So I am assuming this is a well known issue and quickly solvable for you by now. Perhaps the patch loading process could account for the difference in experiance...? one can hope it just works after the fix....

Feel free to inquire with anything else!

@cochranes hopefully sorting out the support contract issues helps with the ability to rollback. (which also hopefully helps when I can finally attempt to reinstall the 6.11.9 patch). Thanks for all of your replies, it is greatly appreciated.

I opted not to backup/restore configs going from 6.10 -> 6.11. Read of too many issues and caveats online, and didn't want anything to do with that. My config is relatively simple, so I manually rebuilt it on my new 6.11 cluster. Its really not bad, as you can export most of the config bits separately and restore them (such as services, devices, auth sources, custom auth methods, endpoint context servers, endpoint database, etc).

I resolved my issue and will detail below in hopes this saves someone else a headache in the future. You do not need to try to rollback to 6.11.1 and try reinstalling 6.11.9 patch.

If after installing the 6.11.9 patch you see this error at the top of the Software Update page:

Then most likely that file is missing from the /var/avenda/platform/store/updates/ directory on your server.

In my case this also caused issues with my Software Update page displaying an error about not having a valid support contract (even though I verified with the license team that my contract was correctly mapped to my hpe passport username I used to generate the support token).

To fix the issue, you need to copy the CPPM-x86_64-20240408-clearpass-6.11-updates-9-aruba-611-patch.bin.meta file to the /var/avenda/platform/store/updates/ directory. You will need TAC help for this, as you will need shell access.

    1.    Download the 6.11.9 patch from the support portal
    2.    Unpack the tar to find this file: CPPM-x86_64-20240408-clearpass-6.11-updates-9-aruba-611-patch.bin.meta
    3.    Using WinSCP (note - you use the arubasupport username and TAC-generated password), copy this file to /home/arubasupport
    4.    Back on the shell, cd to /home/arubasupport and move the file to /var/avenda/platform/store/updates/
             a.    mv CPPM-x86_64-20240408-clearpass-6.11-updates-9-aruba-611-patch.bin.meta /var/avenda/platform/store/updates/
    5.    Refresh the Software Update page and click "check status now" to force a refresh - the errors should go away and you should see available patches listed
    6.    Repeat on subscriber node(s) if needed
