    Hi,

I have an Evo N1020v with Win XP ( all windows updates, all compaq updated, BIOS updates ) an bought an Belkin F5D7010 ( 802.11g ). I have tried to install the drivers that came with the card and the installation freezes when the drivers is being copied. Thought that it could be from the drivers, got the last drivers from Belkin still freezes the machine. Also tried the card in other notebooks ( not HP/Compaq ) and the card worked just fine. I've contacted Compaq Support but they didn't help me at all.

Have anyone installed sucessfully these card? Could it be a BIOS problem ?

Did you try to install in Safe Mode? That would eliminate any conflicts with other software. Was the card plugged in during the driver installation? Installation routine may try to check the hardware before installing the drivers. Look on the installation CD and see if you can find a .inf file. Right click on that and see if the .inf has an install option. Last resort, call Belkin support(sounds like you have already tried everything else).

    Hi Kent,

Tried all the things you wrote, even calling Belkin support. They say that the problem is not theirs because it works fine on other machines, probably it's a CardBus Controller problem.

Hi. have exacly the same problem and no solution whatsoever. Evo N1020v with the latest BIOS. Texas Instruments PCMCIA cardbus driver. XP Professional (Dutch) SP1 and ALL the essential and reccomended updates until today. Belkin 802.11g (F5D7010) PC Card Wireless Lancard.
XP freezes when card installed. Tried the dutch and the english driver.
Then tried the LinkSys Wireless-G adapter model WPC54G and with exacly the same problem. There IS something wrong with the PCMCIA slot inthis Evo n1020v !

I may have a simular problem, but with a DELL Inspiron 5100 with the same cardbuscontroller (TI 4410). The problem is (probably) the PCMCIA cardbus driver, not the driver for the PC Card. Check in Hardware list which PCMCIA cardbusdriver is installed.

My laptop blacks out and reboots when i insert a Tornado 211G 802.11G Wireless network card. In other laptops, the card works fine. Other PC cards, including a 802.11G PC Card, work fine.

    Dell doesn't support this problem.
Texas Instruments sold their division to Acer. Both companies cannot (or will not) help. Tornado is working on a sollution, but so far without succes.

    Hi.

My problem is solved but I don't think you will be happy to hear this. I installed Windows XP prof. myself and updated this Windows version with all the latest drivers and all the Microsoft updates available. I inserted my Belkin card and it FREEZES !! HP support told me that I had to use the Compaq restore CD to start all over again. I thought it was a ridicilous solution because then I needed to install all my applications again. But I also tried a Cisco WiFi PCMCIA card and this one also freezes my system. Finally I decided to re-install my laptop and now WITH the Compaq restore CD. After that I installed all the Microsoft updates and then I inserted my Belkin WiFi card. IT WORKED right away. Also the Cisco card worked. Conclusion: The CarBus driver in the restore CD is NOT the smae driver as the one available on the Internet. I was nog happy installaing all of my applications again but finally I could use my Belkin WiFi card.

    NO!

i think your conclusion is to fast. It may very well be the same driver, but by reinstalling, the IRQ's are divided differently... check this please and let us know!
I think the problem is caused by a combination of driver- and IRQ conflicts. Since it is impossible to change IRQ's in Windows XP after it is installed, you have to reinstall all and just hope the IRQ's are re-shuffled.
(i tried to reinstall once (with my Dell re-install CD) and the IRQ's where the same...)

Have you checked the date / name of your CardBus driver? Is it different than the one you downloaded? (Where did you download it anyway: i cannot find any driver, younger or older...)

    Yep, It IS the Cardbus.
    Texas Instruments PCI-4410 CardBus Controller
    Date driver 01-07-2001
    Version 5.1.2600.0
Now using IRQ 10 (same as before re-install)

I don't exacly know the version of the cardbuss controller after the first installation (The microsoft XP installation and NOT the restoreCD) but I remember it was a driverdate in 2002 and not in 2001 as it is now. Collegue of mine dit the same thing as I did and this also worked. Maybe the problem with the Dell machine is not exacly the same ?

    Hi Marc,
Is it possible for you to send the cardbus driver to me by email stevetong@theresidences.com

I would like to try to replace the driver files directly.
See whether it will work or not.
    Thanks

GReat! Thanks for the driver! Do you happen to have the 2002-version as well (i think my driver is dated 2001 something.
And: what about the IRQ's: are they the same after re-installing or shuffled?

    Hi Marc,
    Thanks for the driver.
I have tried to replace the old pcmcia.sys file.
    Unfortunately, it still hung.
so, I am not sure what exactly is wrong here now.

p.s. my copy of restore cd comes with two cds
one cd is compaq oem windows xp
the another cd is labelled as Pro_ARCD_R2-1

I tried to reboot with Pro_ARCD_R2-1 cd.
    It can not reboot.

If you do not mind, you can check your restore cd and let me know what I am missing
    from restore cds.

    Thanks

(don't look at the date, look at the version)

    Anyone any other version?

    Steve,

I'm at my work rightnow and the Restore-CD's are at home. But I remember that there were 3 restore CD's I had to use. All 3 CD's were labled Restore CD Windows XP Dutch) And if it's not the pcmcia driver what driver or file can be the difference? We have here 2 Evo n1020v laptops. Both with exacly the same problem and both were solved after al complete restore with the Compaq CD's. At first I even replaced the mainboard of my Laptop because I thougt the PCMCIA slot was broken. This didn't solve the problem. The restore did the job. (So I now have a new mainboard in my laptop but the old one wasn't broken.......)

Hmmm... now I don't know anymore. I did this with two different N1020v laptops and in both cases the problme was solved. Maybe it's possible to assign a different IRQ number to the PCMCIA slot ?
By the way. I re-installed the laptop. THEN installed the Belkin card. THEN runned SP1 for XP and THEN did all the other microsoft updates. Maybe you did all the updates first and maybe that is the difference ?

Did the IRQ's change on the two compaq? I can imagine that if the IRQ's are reshuffled a certain way, there are no conflicts anymore (for now... :-) )

Dell still doesn't take my problem serious... I wonder when Compaq is going to help...

Both laptops now have identical settings:
    Texas Instruments PCI-4410 Cardbus Controller
    IRQ 10
    I/O FE00-FEFF
    I/O FD00-FDFF

    thnxs...

Same as my OLD (non-working) setting... For some reason, PCI-4410 now uses IRQ 11 after reinstalling windows.
    and still doesn't work :-(

I am glad you solved your problem...

For me it means there's still hope...

My wireless card = lancom Airlancer MC-54g and my computer hangs as soon as I install the card.

However, I have also a Windows 2000 pro partition on the same computer and in this setup the card works fine. I don't know why.

I have a success story with the EVO N1015 with a Belkin 54g PCMCIA Cardbus type card.

    computer:
    EVO N1015v AMD Athlon 2000+
    512Mb RAM
    Windows XP Professional

(As a side note, i also have a MSI Bluetooth dongle, though this was not attached during install)

I am on the original setup of the computer (factory installed win XP, with all the latest service packs installed)

The Belkin card I have used is the:
Belkin F5D7010xx Wireless Network Card 802.11g (54Mbs) with support for "super g" (108Mbs mode)

    steps taken:

download BIOS Update from HP website, i dont remember the version, but it was released in Nov 2003

    reboot

insert Driver disk for wireless card, start install, and when the program prompts to insert the card, just plug it in.

It seems to work fine, and there is none of the slowdowns, or lock ups mentioned here.

    Hi Nuno

Go the the following website & install ALL of the utilities in sequence under the heading - Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs.

    http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/EvoNotebook/us/locate/64_5178.html

Unfortunalty I already purchased an additional card before working this one out.

But it works for me. MKake sure and install all of the utilities, it's confusing because two of them are labelled the same.

    Hope this helps.

I was having the same problem with multiple PCMCIA NIC's. Used an SMC, a Hawking Technologies, and a Linksys card. Every time I inserted the card it froze the laptop. Once I installed the QFE files the problem was resolved. It would seem that HP / Compaq would take note of all our cries for help and place the correct PCMCIA driver as a separate download on the website, or at lease list the PCMCIA fix as part of the System Enhancements download...

    Yep... smells like bios problem...

What happens if the card is not in the cardbus and you install the drivers?

Problem with some PC-Cards - Cardbus drivers is that they have a conflicting energy save function.

You need a BIOS update. If Compaq / HP don't want to help you (and they should!) you better get another PC Card. Or reinstall Windows XP without energy-save option (complicated to do! and you need the function: without it (i forgot the name :-( ) you will not be able to tell how much energy is left in you battery)

    Good luck!

I had the same problems on my Evo N1020v. Installing the drivers was no problem, but when I connected my pc card my system stopped working.
After changing the 3 bios settings and installing the 3 updates everything is working excellent.

Have been struggling with a Presario 1525EA laptop with same problems for last couple of days, kept freezing as soon as Belkin wireless card installed.

Updated firmware, and made suggested changes to BIOS settings. Applied software patches and I can now successfully use the Belkin wireless card.

Thanks to all the tips/advice in this message.

First I want to thank you all for the effort on solving this bug.

I had the same problem with the Compaq Evo N1020v hanging with the Linksys WPC54G and solved it using the suggested downloads from the HP site.

I just want to add that the download that solved the problem was the "System Enhancements Disk for Windows XP", version 3.00E, found on the "Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs" list. The filename is SP23223.exe

There is other download called "System Enhancements Disk for Microsoft Windows XP", version 3.00H, that can lead us to think this is the updated version for the 3.00E. It is not!

The first time I downloaded the "System Enhancements" I ignored the version 3.00E and downloaded just the version 3.00H, but the problem persisted.

Then I went back to the HP site searching for some other drivers and decided to give it a try and it worked!

So, in a nut shell: download and install all the "Operating System - Enhancements and QFEs", including "System Enhancements Disk for Windows XP", version3.00E AND version 3.00H.

    Cheers!

Hi folks. Just found a solution to the N1020v problem with the PC-cards that actually works and was suprisingly simple. the problem was not with the card controller or the driver but the size of the UMA thats set by the BIOS. The way to fix this is to go in to the bios advanced settings and change the UMA frame size from 32MB to 64MB. when the pc is re-booted this should allow the wireless pc cards to work fully. Hope this helps
