Does your gateway have full connectivity to the internet?
Is DNS working, so if you ping device-uswest5-d2.central.arubanetworks.com from the controller do you see the IP address? Ping itself probably will not work.
What's the current firmware version on your 7005? If it's old, like if the gateway has been in a warehouse or stock for long time, you may have more success by manually upgrading to a more recent firmware, either 8.10 or direct the 10.x that you want to go to.
