Hi all. I need to know if I must download intermediate version to update my switch.

    For HP Switch 5406Rzl2 (J9850A) KB.16.06.0009 to KB.16.11.0004

    and Aruba 2930F-48G-740W-PoE+-4SFP+ Switch (JL558A) WC.16.08.0003 to WC.16.11.0004

Hello Maxime, technically speaking you should be able to upgrade from KB.16.06 to KB.16.11 (and from WC.16.08 to WC.16.11) without using any particular interim software release, just be prepared to - according to Release Notes (if that is reported) - see the BootROM automatically updated too (with auto-reboot of the Switch), this will imply your switch could perform two consecutive power cycles (so be calm, no warning).

As usual try to perform those "jumps" being connected through Serial Console so you will be able to grab all the messages during the booting phase(es) and read relevant Release Notes to understand if there will be issues with particular configuration statements even if this could be an issue more during the downgrading procedure than during the upgrade one (do not forget to backup you running configuration and keep it in a safe place before starting).

Keep trace of your starting software version (show versions, show flash) so you have a "starting point" to inform about the Aruba TAC in case of issues.

The above is valid for upgrading (or updating) standalone switches, in case of stacks things are little bit different.

I need help updating boot ROM and not FIRMWARE of my J9850A.

I searched hell-to-heaven on HPE but didn't get a clue. All I get is to upgrade the firmware.

    Boot ROM Version

Secondary Boot ROM Version : KB.16.01.0009     -------------> I want to upgrade

Request your kind help on the process.

    Why?

Those Primary and Secondary Boot ROM Versions (KB.16.01.0009) are the right ones related to your application version (KB.16.11.0020). Don't let Boot ROM and Application Software similar build numbering to confuse you (read release notes).

    Good Morning,
Thanks a lot for your reply.
My Switch is not accepting CISCO SFPs, which I have some extra). The local vendor said I need change Boot ROM so that it becomes Cisco compatible.
I am using HP Switches for last ten years but never thought of this.
Only when I ran short of SFPs -----
    You advice is required.

    Thank you again.

You can try to add the command: "allow-unsupported-transceiver" to your configuration; it will warn you that warranty is void and TAC will not be able to support you if there are issues around that unsupported transceiver. Unsure where that advice to upgrade the bootrom is based on, it's not something that I recognize.

I don't think it's even possible to just upgrade the bootrom, it's included in the firmware and handled automatically.

Hi! as Herman wrote you, at best, you could try to let the Aruba switch to recognize (to recognize doesn't mean to support) alien SFP transceivers (where alien means 3rd Party so not original HPE Aruba) with the provided CLI command.

There is no warranty that procedure will work, no support is granted too...only when you use supported original HPE Aruba Tranceivers and/or DACs (related to you specific Aruba 5400R zl2 switch series) you will be sure the SFP Transceivers will work as per specification (as intended).

The suggestion given you by your local vendor: "The local vendor said I need change Boot ROM so that it becomes Cisco compatible." is wrong (at worst) or confusing (at best) especially because the local vendor referred specifically to change (Switch) Boot ROM and not trying other non conventional (unsupported) approaches.

Some users purchased 3rd Party transceivers custom flashed "to appear as HPE one"...but this is a very different story I here report only for reference, I'm not suggesting that approach (vendor wanted to suggest that instead? I don't believe so since original Cisco SFP Tranceivers you have as spare parts were already flashed by Cisco at factory with their own very definitive Cisco identity) so - in any case - go with original HPE Aruba parts if you can.
