  • 1.  HPe 5406zl Power Supply Swap

    Posted Oct 16, 2023 07:26 PM

    Hello!

I have a HPe 5406zl that currently has redundant J8712A power supplies. I would like to swap those out with J9306A power supplies. My question is can that be done as a hot-swap since I will be mixing the J8712A and the J9306A for a short period of time during the swap? I know the documentation says they cannot be mixed, but can they be mixed for the swap period?

Thanks for any help or advice.

Hi, given that different power supplies typically have different power specifications the warning is valid. Particularly if you try and go to a smaller wattage when using POE for example.

However, We had lots of 5406 in our estate and I did sometimes come across units running two different PSU in production. So it does work.

I've also seen where swapping the correct PSU (inserting the replacement of the same model) causes a reboot. Perhaps because of crash or because slamming the PSU into the frame caused an electrical short. Either way I would plan for an outage with the users.

I have 5412s which are basically identical to the 5406 except larger.  The big difference is that the 5412 has 4 PSUs instead of 2.  That being said I've hot-swapped PSUs with both matching and non-matching parts and I've never had an issue.  One thing to check before you do the swap is what your power redundancy is set to.  On the 5412 I have options for either full or n+1 redundancy.  I'm not sure what your options will be on the 5406 with only 2 PSUs, just make sure it's not set to none.

The J8712A PSU is POE only (not POE+) and should NOT be mixed with a J9306A PSU which is POE+. POE and POE+ have slightly different voltages.

I have successfully mixed different types of POE PSUs in the old chassis, and different types of POE+ PSUs in the new chassis, but never POE and POE+ together.
