I am updating the firmware for our HPE 5510 L3 switch but as soon as I apply, it gives error as below. Kindly advise as to how to resolve

Go to the file explorer of the switch and delete old log files and old FW distributions. Check if you have .bin files from older (not running) version of FW. This is typical leftover from upgrades.

Depend on flash size it is possible, that you will be forced to delete current .bin files to perform the upgrade, but this carries the risk of rendering switch unbootable if not careful.

Doing upgrade from CLI will get you much more elaborate error message than from GUI.

For comware, I have to delete old firmware before loading new. Old files are not deleted automatically. I haven't had to delete log files or current bin files.

One thing that isn't well advertised is that if you delete a file by default it goes in the .trash folder. Using the /unreserved parameter on the cli avoids that.

So deleting all IPE files, non current bin files and all of the trash folder has always resolved this issue.

    Hi Manish.

Detail instructions are in Release Notes. I suggest to reach TAC for help if you need a step by step instructions for your specific situation.  We can provide you only general guidance.

In general, check free space and delete unneeded files like old .ips and old .bin files. Do not delete current booted .bin files unless you can't free enough space any other way.

Yep, I recall just one old thread (above many others threads) about freeing space on Comware flash, it was (is, still) on the (now defunct) HPE Community - Networking Forum, look, as example, at this one.

I have gone through the same but in my switch it does not support dir /all due to this I am not able to see all the files  so I can identify unwanted files!

Yes I could see the below details which is not sufficient to delete unwanted files, I hope so, please advise

You need to be on ">" prompt for DIR command to work. dir /all and dir /all-filesystems should be working on your switch.

If you are in the system-view ([switch_name]) change to user-view with quit command.

You can also use GUI File Explorer if you are not versed in CLI to see and delete files.

Hi, you are running the same version as one of my switches and it is also a 5510.  I can run the following commands:

    • dir /all-filesystems
    • dir
    • dir .trash

But likely just dir will be enough to see if you have unused files. Once you have identified which files are to be deleted use a command like this:

    • delete /unreserved flash:/5510HI-CMW710-R3506P11.ipe

You have two .ipe files on your flash as per your snapshot. Delete them.

You can delete any IPE file.

You can delete any BIN file that is not the current version.

You should use the delete /unreserved version of the command if available.

You should delete the file from all members of the IRF

    OK!

As Ian wrote. Do not delete current version of .bin files like 5510hi-cmw710-boot-r3506p02.bin and 5510hi-cmw710-system-r3506p02.binWhat are current main and backup boot files you can check with display boot command.

And do not forget to delete files on all members of the stack.

    display irf

will show you stack members if any.

As I mentioned I have kept only below files out of which 2 are current, is it ok ? Because in my switch below two files are showing as current !

     -rw-     7177216 May 24 2013 23:50:09   5510hi-cmw710-boot-r3506p11.bin
       1 -rw-     1008640 Jan 19 2013 05:42:04   5510hi-cmw710-freeradius-r3506p02.bin
       2 -rw-    84032512 May 24 2013 23:50:54   5510hi-cmw710-system-r3506p11.bin

Do I need to restart the switch so that it gets free storage ?

I deleted unwanted files with command

    delete filename

then I tried to give command

    delete /unreserved

but is not working even though it supports

Also anything needs to be done such as

    >wr or likewise

Also I have kept the current files only

    0 -rw-     7177216 May 24 2013 23:50:09   5510hi-cmw710-boot-r3506p11.bin

Hi, enter these commands (with your chosen file to be deleted) and paste the output if there is an error:

    return

    delete /unreserved flash:/<filename>

If you have an IRF cluster also do this:

    delete /unreserved slot2#flash:/<filename>

As I mentioned I just deleted without using /unreserved so now if I use

    >delete /unreserved then it does not show files that are now in trash

    please advise !

Files that are undeleted without the /unreserved are simply moved to the hidden directory called ".trash".

You can see them with dir .trash

    To delete:

    cd .trash

    delete *

You don't need to reboot the switch. Just empty .trash directory and you are good to go.

Another way to empty the recycle bin :

    > reset recycle-bin [ /force ]

Command delete <filename> just put files into .trash folder and will not free storage space. You need to use delete /unreserve to free the space.
