Looking H3C´s for the latest upcoming HP products, I found this

IRF3(Intelligent Resilient Framework 3). As google translation is not that great, can someone please explain the difference between IRF2 and IRF3?

    Hi Michael

IRF 3.0 will be vertical stacking. Stack a Switch with an other Switch-Model. It is like the Ciscos Nexus 7000 stacking with Nexus 2000 Portextenders.

Would be a great thing for datacenters.

What are the chances that this will include already existing models and not just future models?

Im thinking of doing this between a 5120EI and 5820?

So it´s called Vertical IRF with "Controlling Bridge" and "Port Extender" devices.

Btw, interesting there´s an HP S5120-HI mentioned.

As mentioned IRF 3 (as well called vertical-irf or VCF) is the evolution of the

horizontally built IRF 2 into the vertical axis.

We talk by now abot avery limited amount of devices that will actually support IRF 3.

As controling bridge: 12500 series / 11900 series and the 5900th

AS Port extender: 5500HI familie, 5700 familie and the 5900th.

    The usage model is either:

     - within the data center: any of the CB + either 5700th or 5900th or combinations as PE

    -  within campus envirinments: any of the CBs as building collector + combinations of 5500HI POE and the others as PE

The differentiator to the nexus approach is: A PE in an IRF 3 is doing Layer 2! Therefore local switching.

The feature is closly bound to the availability of Comware OS 7. So a close look into the availability of Comware 7 in above mentioned devides would make sense.

    Hope this helps
