    Hello everyone!

I want to know if there is a list with the supported devices by the HP IMC?

    Thanks!

There is an internal list that is maintained that shows the support status for various devices. Note that some devices are fully supported (including VLAN & ACL management), while others have partial support.

So far, HP does not want to publish the list. However, you can log a support case and ask them about a specific list of devices, and they will tell you the support status for those devices.

The last slide I saw said over 6200 devices supported now! Without the HP internal list though, you can install the 60-day eval version of IMC and check for the specific device in the list (see below).

Example output (you can then search for what you want)

Sure, that is a list of OIDs which would be recognized by IMC, but recognizing a vendor or model is not the same as supporting management of the device.

HP has different support levels for devices, indicating support for backup/restore config, firmware updates, config templates, acl manager, vlan manager, live device panel views etc.

So it would still be nice to know which devices are supported at which level by IMC and just get a full list of HP...

Peter's right - just because the OID is listed, doesn't mean that it will support config mgmt, etc.

The best thing to do is probably to install it somewhere, and try it out. You can also look in server\conf\adapters\ICC\, to get a feel for the supported systems, but it's a bit more challenging to look through the scripts.

I have also been looking for a list of supported devices (HP & 3rd Party) and I find it very interesting that you say HP are unwilling to publish it..!

They published a full list for PCM+, so I wonder what embarrassing little fact they are hiding..? Perhaps IMC has better support for Cisco devices over HP devices..!

Come on HP show us what IMC can support..! After all you must be desperate to sell some licenses as you have distribution partners stuffing it onto every HP Network equipment quote they churn out...

I would expect to see it published this year. Part of the challenge is in being careful as to exactly what they state they will support - if they publicly state it, they have to take support calls on it.

I would not expect it to have better Cisco support over HP, as it was developed to support Comware-based systems originally. Generally Comware/Procurve devices are well supported, along with Cisco IOS-based systems.

Thank you for the feedback... I do hope they get their act together and publish it soon...

My 'better Cisco support' comment was a little tongue-in-cheek, but IMHO HP are still 'playing catch-up' to the more established vendors - primarily Cisco/Juniper...

If they (HP) want to be taken seriously they need to be more open and provide full and frank technical details on all of their products...

I am involved with specifying systems for clients most every day and if I am not confident that product X will support product Y, I will use another product that I can confirm does... Simple matter on not putting my head on the block...

    Cheers,

    MC

At least they make it easy to download a trial to see if it works, but yeah, if you're making recommendations on systems, you don't always have the time to do a full trial. You really need that info published.

HP Software (for all their faults) is actually pretty good at publishing a list of supported devices for NNMi and Network Automation.

Did anyone find a published list of supported HP & Non-HP devices, for IMC v7.x?

Seems it's still the same process as detailed above.

Are there specific devices you're looking to check?

Looking at support for newer HP/Cisco devices, eg HP 2920, 5930, 11900 and Cisco 6800, 3650, Nexus 7700/6k etc.

Would be nice to see the supported devices lists publically published/updated regularly, as per warranty statements etc, to show customers current status per IMC releases... (mainly for HP devices, but third party would also be useful!)

You're right, it would be great to see a published list. It's something I've spoken to the product team about on several occasions. No luck yet though.

As a general rule, the newer kit won't yet be officially supported in IMC. However...if IMC already supports other similar devices, then it's easy to add support for the new devices yourself, so IMC can do backups, etc.

An example is the Cisco 3650 - the config backup process is the same as existing Cisco IOS-based systems. You just need to add the sysObjectID to one XML file, to tell IMC which backup adapter to use. You may also need to add the definition for that system to the web interface, so it shows up as a "Cisco 3650", not "Cisco Catalyst Switch".

It only gets a bit more interesting if you want to add support for device classes that are not currently there - e.g. Fortinet systems. We're trying to build up a group of 3rd-party adapters that can be added in to support those systems. It's slowly growing.

Will IMCsupport customers existing NAM cards in 6500 chassis?

I haven't used the NAM cards myself, so I don't know how they appear to an NMS. What sort of support are you looking for?

I was wondering how IMC would recognise them (IMC supported devices list!), and what functionality it would/could provide, around thier Netflow capabilities

  • 17.  RE: List of supported devices

    Posted Jan 13, 2014 04:49 PM

I haven't used the NAM cards, so forgive my ignorance, but does it show up as a linecard in a device, or does it have its own management interface? (IP address, SNMP, CLI, etc)

If it exports standard NetFlow, then IMC will probably be able to parse it. If it does something "interesting", then IMC will have issues. (That's what happens with ASA).

Being listed as a "supported device" or not doesn't necessarily mean much for IMC. If the device doesn't show up with the right model name, you can easily change that yourself. If IMC doesn't natively support device config backup/restore, you can write your own adapter for it. If the device can be monitored via SNMP + CLI, you can probably do things with it in IMC.

You might want to run up a trial IMC server, and see if it does what you need.

Did anyone find docuementation/matrix for 3rd party device support within IMC v7.x?

Does anyone got the device compatibility list?

  • 21.  RE: List of supported devices

    Posted Oct 17, 2019 08:25 AM

    Hello,

In my opinion, the Compatibility Matrix will stay internal-only for the forseeable future. I'm not in a position to decide whether or not it should be published, and my statements below are primarily my personal thoughts on this topic, in hope that it will explain the situation for you all.

First of all, the internal list is NOT an authority even for us in HPE Support on what must work or must be supported. It's only a guideline on what was tested and confirmed as working at some point in time with the device models listed there. The list has over 8700 device models including countless third-party devices, and publishing it could be seen as an official statement/guarantee that "this feature will work on this device", which doesn't seem like a good idea to me. That's probably a reason it is internal only.

This was not an issue for PCM+, because the Compatibility Matrix there included only a limited number of HPE Switches and Routers, without any third-party devices, and that's relatively simple to commit to officially testing and supporting with every new release.

We already provide official support for anyone with active warranty/contract for IMC who encounters issues with third-party devices in IMC, help out anyone on the forums whenever possible, and generally fix any bugs encountered even with third-party device scripts after they get reported to us.

If you really need to know whether your device will work with IMC, you can always:

    * Install IMC with the 60-day free trial and see for yourself whether it works to recognize and work with the device. For specific features, nothing is more effective than testing IMC or a Module with your devices directly.

    * Check the "System > Resource Management > Device Definition" list in IMC to see which devices can be recognized. Recognition doesn't mean it supports all features, but can be a good indicator of whether or not IMC will need any customization to work with the devices.

    * Some features like Config Backup include a page that lists your devices and which methods/protocols they support for it. Others like VLAN Management will simply hide unsupported devices on their device list pages. For the Config Backup example, if you open the Configuration Center Options page, it has a list all of your devices and their support for Config Backup/Restore/Software Deployment features.

    * Customize and extend IMC to support your third-party devices for various features to work. For this, please check the "Extending and customizing functions to support third-party devices" chapter in the Administrator Guide, or the third-party guide for IMC Customization.

    * If all else does not work for you, open a support case to check for you.

Hope that helps explain the situation for you.
