You can upgrade direct.
Two things:
- Pay attention to the release notes and the free flash requirements for the upgrade.
- There are some changes in behavior and configuration that need to be accounted for.

Thank a lot! I have one last question can I upgrade directly from version 8.5 to 8.12, or is an intermediate upgrade necessary?

Your message was posted as a duplicate. This is the answer I wrote on the other post: "For live upgrades, a Mobility conductor (MCR) would be needed. Do you have that?
Is the current controller already in a cluster? Moving from single gateway to a production cluster is something I would carefully test, then perform the migration with support from your partner.
If the 'no disruption' is a nice to have, I would take the pill and build a cluster on the new version with just the new gateway (still would need MCR for a cluster), then AP pre-load the new version firmware and move the APs to the new gateway. In that case downtime per AP would be the reboot time; and when the old controller doesn't have any APs left, add it to the cluster.
This may also be a moment to move to AOS10 with Central, especially if you don't have an MCR yet.
A live upgrade can take hours, depending on your network size, but as it's without disruption for the clients (assuming you have enough coverage redundancy that you can lose any AP for a short time), that's not an issue.
To stay in live upgrades, you may need to go to 8.6 LSR (take latest in that train) and after that to 8.10 LSR to become supported again. If you can afford the downtime, the other described approach saves you the intermediate upgrade step.
For sure, get your partner and/or TAC involved in this process, especially if you can't risk the downtime or need it to be as short as possible."
To add, AOS 8.12 is stable for the 7210. There is no concept of stable/unstable releases with AOS, all versions go through the same testing processes and should not have stability issues. With an LSR (long service release) you can stick to the same version for a longer period, what some customers prefer. The SSR (short service releases) introduce new features and AP models, and may require to upgrade to a new major release quicker to stay in a supported configuration. If there are features that are in 8.12 but not in 8.10, you can go there without issues (if the version is supported by all controllers/APs). On the other hand, if you are happy with whatever is in 8.10 you can go there and do just bug fixes for longer period of time.

Subject: Live Upgrade (cluster) on Aruba 7210 (AOS 8.5) – Is it supported?
Hello, I only have 2 controllers (MC), so apparently, a live upgrade is not possible because I would need a Mobility Master (MM) to orchestrate it. I will therefore have to perform a manual upgrade by switching the Wi-Fi APs to the other controller during the OS upgrade. Will they still work despite having different OS versions after upgrading one controller? I was planning to upgrade the controller to version 8.10 so it can support the AP 505. Version 8.12 also supports this AP, but is it stable for the 7210? Thanks.

Hi,
First create the cluster and configure redundancy.
Then you can perform Preload AP Image by going to Maintenance > WLAN > Preload AP Image
Then you can perform Controller Upgrade
This will have minimum downtime / impact, but answering your questions how long, idk.
In the regards to the Aruba OS, you need to check the AP Matrix Compatibility with Aruba OS, so which version is supported by the APs you have.
https://arubanetworking.hpe.com/techdocs/central/2.5.7/content/aos10x/aos10x-overview/supported-devices-aos10.htm
Also, this process depends on how your Aruba infrastructure is currently deployed. Do you have Only 2 Controllers or you have 2 Controllers and 1 Conductor?

Hello, I am planning to acquire another Aruba 7210 to build a cluster. My initial plan is to set it up on the same version 8.5.0.2, then upgrade both controllers to the latest version to support AP 505 access points without disrupting production. Is this feasible with this version? Approximately how long would the upgrade process take? What precautions should I consider? What is the recommended stable ArubaOS version for the Aruba 7210? Thank you.
