We are running a MM on a virtual machine. we want to have redundancy on the MM side, can I use another VM as a backup MM and have them master -standby config ? I was thinking to use L3 connectivity between them (different data centers).

I was thinking to config the second MM virtual machine as a backup MM and than add the L3 config on the existing MM for redundancy and all other configs..is that ok ? Migrating from existing MM to a master-standby config will affect the MDs and user functionality ?

You can add a second VM at a second datacenter (L3).  There is a configuration piece where you will have to add to all of your MD configuration to point to the second MM as a secondary MM, in general.
