MultiZone Access Point capacity query

    Hi all,

I have a customer that has two 7240XMs for their corporate primary SSID tunnels, and two 7240XMs terminating datazone guest SSID tunnels using MultiZone.

It is a possibility that they could hit the 2048 AP limit within the next few years, so we are considering options for scaling.

My question is regarding the MultiZone / Guest controllers in HA. If the Guest controllers only terminate 2 guest datazone SSIDs - no primary tunnels - could there be more than 2048 APs connected to them? Or would I need to look at scaling these controllers as well?

Hi, I think they cannot terminate traffic for more APs than their normal capacity, since for the Data Zone controllers they count APs as registered as soon as the 1st datazone ssid is working.  You'll most likely have to add controllers to extend the capacity. I don't know if anyone else knows something different and can jump in.

    I hope this helps.

You can cluster your data zone controllers as well. It may be that you need to have separate Mobility conductors for that, as at least in early versions the Data Zone could not be managed by the same MCRs. This limitiation may be only on older 8.X versions, but I don't have that information ready.

    Thanks Herman,

We clustered the Data Zone controllers and managed them via a separate pair of MCRs to keep everything separate from corporate. The Data Zone controllers will also eventually manage SSIDs used by other tenants.

At this point I'm not sure if using MultiZone for Guest provides enough benefit to not fall back to the old L2 GRE tunnel solution to the guest controllers via the corporate controllers. If I use L2 GRE, at least the AP count is reduced.

Ulises - my friendly local Aruba SE confirmed exactly what you said. If it appears as connected AP on the controller, regardless of whether it is being used by a Primary Zone or Data Zone SSID, it will count toward the platforms AP capacity.
