    Hi all

I recently picked up an old 3Com 4800G-48-PWR POE switch for home use. I've successfully (I believe) re-branded it from 3Com to HPE and updated for the last firmware (5.20.99 R2222P12) and BootROM (721).

    For context:

    <3Com_4800G_48PWR>display device manuinfo
    Slot 1:
    DEVICE_NAME : 3CRS48G-48P-91
    DEVICE_SERIAL_NUMBER : 9T5FDCS47EC80
    MAC_ADDRESS : 20FD-F147-EC80
    MANUFACTURING_DATE : 2010-11-13
    VENDOR_NAME : 3COM

    And...

    <3Com_4800G_48PWR>display device verbose
     Slot 1
SubSNo PortNum PCBVer FPGAVer CPLDVer BootRomVer AddrLM Type State
    0 52 REV.C NULL 002 721 IVL MAIN Normal

    slot 1 info:
    Up Time : 0 weeks, 0 days, 1 hours, 18 minutes
Brd Type : HP A5500-48G-PoE+ EI Switch with 2 Interface Slots
    Brd Status : Master
    Sft Ver : Release 2222P12
    Patch Ver : None
    PCB Ver : REV.C
    BootRom Ver : 721
    CPLD Ver : 002

    And...

    <3Com_4800G_48PWR>display poe device
PSE ID SlotNo SubSNo PortNum MaxPower(W) State Model
     4 1 0 48 370 off PD67024

However, I can't enable POE anywhere. I believe the POE/PSE firmware got corrupted/lost somewhere along the line, as the POE hardware and software versions show as 0:

    <3Com_4800G_48PWR>display poe pse
     PSE ID : 4
     PSE Slot No : 1
     PSE SubSlot No : 0
     PSE Model : PD67024
     PSE Power Enabled : enabled
     PSE Power Priority : -
     PSE Current Power : 0 W
     PSE Average Power : 0 W
     PSE Peak Power : 0 W
     PSE Max Power : 370 W
     PSE Remaining Guaranteed : 370 W
     PSE CPLD Version : -
     PSE Software Version : 0
     PSE Hardware Version : 0
     PSE Legacy Detection : disabled
     PSE Utilization-threshold : 80
     PSE Pd-policy Mode : disable
PSE PD Disconnect Detect Mode : AC

I believe I need to fix this with:

poe update { full | refresh } filename pse pse-id

However, to do so I need the POE/PSE firmware file (loaded into "root" - I assume this is flash). I don't think I have any old version of this file (to use the "refresh" option above), I need to source and upload it to use the "full" option.

I haven't had any luck finding the firmware file for the POE/PSE - I found some reference to the type of file I need here (https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=kc0129374en_us), but no luck finding what I need. I did attempt the HPE support chatbot, but it didn't recognise the serial number of my switch.

    Any suggestions?

    Hi

Question, - did you check the state of the PoE capability with the old 3Com brandend setting / firmware so BEFORE the rebranding? I think the current problem might be because of an non-proper (or not fully supported) conversion from 3Com to HP. The model description "HP A5500-48G-PoE+ EI Switch with 2 Interface Slots" seems to be simply wrong because of the PoE+ in the name. So perhaps the current "HP config" expects PoE+ hardware while only PoE is present.

Therefore I would try out to convert the branding back to 3Com or even H3C. It could be that this is enough to bring back the original PoE functionality. And you are also more flexible with any SFP (and other) modules because the 3Com firmware didn't had any restrictions while the HP requires original HP branded parts. ;-)

That's by the way the main reason why I have never changed the branding to HP. And yes, if you have made the change back to 3Com then make a total reset of every setting aka to "factory default".

Sidenote, - this topic is really interesting because it shows somehow that it would be technically possible to upgrade a 4800G PoE switch to PoE+ standard. So probably this would work when the PD67024 power supply and the corresponding PoE hardware is replaced by newer hardware versions.

    Hi @lorn10

Thanks for the response - regarding compatibility (and for anyone's interested, the latest R2222P12 firmware is available here), the relevant release notes (here) note on page 10 that this firmware is compatible with the HP A5500-48G-PoE+ EI (i.e. what my switch is reporting as post rebrand and update), 3Com Switch 4800G 48-Port PWR (i.e. what my switch really is-and still reports as via "manuinfo"), and the H3C S5500-52C-PWR-EI.

Regarding pre-rebrand testing, I only did some very limited testing pre-upgrade (it was very early in my Comware journey!). I was able to enable POE on one port (with a Unifi AP Pro plugged in), but it didn't actually boot up. However, I didn't actually run "display poe device" or "display poe pse" to get more detailed information (as above).

I'm not against rebranding as H3C (or back to 3Com), but I understand that the firmware available as "3Com" or "H3C" is quite a bit older than the HP R2222P12. If possible, I'd like to source a PSE firmware file (even if it's an older one) and try that first. However, the POE/PSE firmware files don't seem to be available on the public-facing sources-hence my shout-out here. There are a few posts around about calling HP support to get a file - haven't tried that yet, but doubt I'd get far given my lack or any support contract or warranty, and the fact that the switch is very EOL.

For anyone's reference (mostly me as I found it hard to find) I believe the relevant "J" model numbers for each of the relevant switches we're talking about here are as follows:

    •  HP A5500-48G-PoE+ EI : JG240A
    • 3Com Switch 4800G 48-Port PWR : JD011A
    • H3C S5500-52C-PWR-EI: JD376A

As far I know you can use the newest HP A5500 firmware on your 3Com 4800G without any rebranding. I have done this with firmware R2222P08 (and others) if I remember me correctly. So I searched for the JG240A firmware and upload it onto my 3Com 4800G. Yes, for whatever reason some of the newer firmware versions are not listed when searching with the older JD011A product number. Most likely because that model is in the meantime totally EOL while the HP A5500 model family is still under some sort of extended support.  Whatever, until now the JG240A firmware worked for me absolutely fine at my 3Com 4800G without any rebranding. ;-)

Thanks @lorn10 - I'll try rebranding back to 3Com tonight and see if that helps at all. If not, I might be asking for a copy of your POE/PSE firmware file.

Okay, - but regarding the POE/PSE firmware file I think that one is part of the main firmware image? So it is not available as a standalone file.

However, if there exist a way to grab it directly from my 4800G switch then I can try. But in every case I would need instructions for that because I am not really a Comware professional and even not a "networker".

Perhaps it would make sense to ping @parnassus about that topic.

Thanks might need to take you up on that... @parnassus - any guidance on how to extract the PSE software image from a running switch?

Hi @lorn10 - based on the commands manual for the 3Com, the POE/PSE file should look something like 0400_001.S19 (or something else with a .s19 extension).

Do you have a file that looks like that in flash (from the web interface, you should be able to see the content of flash from Device --> File Management)?

Okay... this is a bit weird. I rebranded back to 3Com, as shown below:

    <3Com_4800G_48PWR>display device verbose
     Slot 1
SubSNo PortNum PCBVer FPGAVer CPLDVer BootRomVer AddrLM Type State
    0 52 REV.C NULL 002 721 IVL MAIN Normal

    slot 1 info:
    Up Time : 0 weeks, 0 days, 0 hours, 14 minutes
    Brd Type : Switch 4800G PWR 48-Port
    Brd Status : Master
    Sft Ver : Release 2222P12
    Patch Ver : None
    PCB Ver : REV.C
    BootRom Ver : 721
    CPLD Ver : 002

Firmware version show as per when HP-branded. However, in the web interface (which, amusingly, now has HPE logos etc.), shows the firmware version as S4800G-CMW520-R2210-S168 (maybe this as the last of the 3Com branded firmwares??):

I reinstalled the R2222P12 firmware to see if that did anything, but it's still the same in terminal (i.e. accurate) and web (not accurate).
The PSE software and hardware versions are still displaying as "0" for both, and I can't enable the PSE or POE on any ports.

Okay... Just for interests sake, I tried rebranding at H3C... When I did the firmware version reports correctly in the web interface, as it did when HPE branded, but not when 3Com branded.

Well... just for interests sake, I tried rolling back the firmware to the last version that displays as available (here) explicitly for the JD011A 0 R2222P08. It loaded fine, but does have the same weirdness as R2222P12, in that which the terminal shows it accurately, when brand is set to 3Com, the web interface shows as R2210-S168 (displays correctly when branded as HPE or H3C).

Either way... still no luck with enabling POE.

Okay, will look tomorrow Monday into my 4800G switch about that POE/PSE file. But I am from Central Europe so this will be at the earliest in about 12 hours. ;-)

And the firmware version thing in the Web-UI with 3Com branding is a know bug. It really looks that this aspect was no longer taken into account after the takeover of 3Com by HP. (This is not the case for H3C (= Huawei + 3Com) because it was back then fully adopted by Huawei and still exist on the Chinese market.)

As assumed by me there exist no separate PoE firmware file. The PoE/PSE firmware is part of the main firmware.

So it looks in the end that this is perhaps somehow a hardware fault? Or something went totally wrong during the firmware upgrade and the PoE information got corrupted. Therefore I would try a hardware reset back to the original settings (with 3Com or H3C branding). This could bring back those missing firmware stuff.

@lorn10@lorn10... it looks like you may have been correct about a potential hardware issue... the switch is now failing to start up (plug it in and fan starts to spin up, the stops, then tries again... etc.), so I suspect a failed power supply. So the issue may have been a failing power supply all along (maybe!)

If anyone else has any ideas on how to source the mystical *.s19 POE firmware file  (for future reference), I'd be keen to know, as the manual still references using it in the case of PSE issues (and it doesn't seem to be present (at least not visible) in working installs).

Thanks again for all your help @lorn10@lorn10!

I have 5130EI_1950-POE-145.bin which we required a few years back. It was gained through a support case rather than a download from the normal places.
