  • 1.  Replacing both Mobility Masters - Licensing

    Hi,

After a lenghty session with TAC we have determined that we are unable to resize the flash disk of our VM Mobility Masters using the normal procedure.  The automatic new disk detection and flash transfer on boot doesn't happen, so we will have to rebuild new VMs separately and do a config/flash restore.

As far as licensing goes, will our cluster keep the current license pool if we replace both MMs, one after the other? Or will we need to pre-emptively get the licenses transfered to the new master?

    Thank you.

Did TAC give you any guidance on this?  I am assuming these are VMs.

Thanks for your reply.  The ticket was specifically about resizing so it was closed after we couldn't make it happen.  Yes they are VMs.  I forgot to mention they are currently running 8.2.0.1.  The flash resize is part of an upgrade project to bring them to 8.3.

The license is tied to the mac address of the device that you installed it on.  Is the current MM operational?  If yes, you can install another MM L2 as a "backup Master", it will obtain those licenses and keep them when you sunset the one you want to do away with.

Is there anything preventing you from doing that?

Again, this is an idea and you should check with TAC to make sure there is nothing preventing you from doing that.

If it is tied to the MAC then I guess at some point I'll have to transfer them.  I guess I'll open another TAC ticket to discuss the step by step details of the whole thing.

    Thank you.

It is tied to the mac, but if you add a backup master (MM), it should be transferred to that device, at least in that heirarchy.

If the VM needs to be re-sized, then the procedure to resize outlined in the installation guide would allow the VM to be resized without changing the mac address and not impacting the licensing. Did that not work?
