  • 1.  Replacing HPE 3500yl-48G-PWR Switch with Aruba Stack 2930F

    Posted Mar 08, 2023 12:15 PM

I have been trying to replace an HPE 3500yl-48G-PWR Switch with Aruba Stack 2930F connected to a HPE 5412R zl2 Switch. The HPE 3500yl-48G-PWR is currently connected over a OM1 Fiber SC - SC fiber connection in the card on the back of the device to the HPE 5412R zl2 Switch in the 1 GbE/10GbE SFP ports using a J9152A 10G SFP. This connection works and shows the proper link lights. Using the same run I have attempted to connect the Aruba Stack 2930F. I first attempted to make the connection using a J4858C  1G SFP and OM1 fiber but realized that the compatibility may be the issue. I then tried a J4858D-GT 1G connected to the 2930F switch and used an OM2 fiber because it is what the SFP is compatible with. This still did not work. I had checked the configs on all devices and can not find any indication on why this connection may not be able to be made or even recognized as being plugged in. I also check logs with the same outcome. I see logs for the SFP hot swaps but no other indications of changes or issues. For the sake of trying everything, I tried the following combinations. I know some of these combinations do are not compatible combinations but I was attempting all combinations. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Are you trying to setup a short range 10 Gbps link between the Aruba 2930F and the Aruba 5400R zl2 over MMF OM2 or OM3 fiber optic cabling? if so, on both ends, please use supported SR Short Range SFP+ Transceivers like the J9150D, as example.

The link is between Aruba 2930F and HPE 5412R zl2 over OM1 Fiber optic cabling.

It's not clear what you are trying to achieve but a J9150D SFP+ pair working at 850 nm and deployed over a MMF (62.5/125 um) OM1 fiber optic link will provide you a 10 Gbps throughput over a maximum length of only 33 meters (that's due to OM1).

Varying the OM class (OM2 or better OM3) will enhance the maximum length reaching up to 330 meters (always at 10 Gbps).

Other types of transceivers pairs (e.g. SFP at 1 Gbps) will produce different results in relationship with supported distances (SR/LR) and supported type of fiber optic links (MMF/SMF and OM) between transceivers.

It's important to know: effective distance, FO link type/technology...desired speed...and then look for a right transceivers pair to reach desired scenario.

What model of 2930F are you using?

The chart you have indicates that you are trying to connect a 4858 to a 9152.  You cannot connect a 1g sfp to a 10g sfp.

    Are these original Aruba parts?
