  • 1.  Sfp port issue on 7210's

    Posted Oct 12, 2023 09:24 AM

We have a strange issue on two 7210 controllers where we have a fibre sfp in port 0/0/0 connecting to a switch. The connections from port 0/0/0 on both controllers work fine. We want to use the copper port 0/0/0 for a different purpose so want to move the fibre connection to sfp port 0/0/5 which is free on both controllers. in both cases though the connection will not come up using port 0/0/5. We see this message in the log:

    Oct 12 13:13:00 2023  fpapps[3632]: <399816> <3972> <ERRS> |fpapps|  hapiPortLinkStatus: Speed unknown for port 0/0/5

The port is configured as an access port and the speed and duplex settings cannot be altered as it is an sfp port. If we move the connection back to port 0/0/0 it works fine. We have also tried port 0/0/4 and get the same issue.

    Other details are:

    #show interface gigabitethernet 0/0/5 transceiver

We have also tried with single mode SFP's and cables but get the same issue. Any ideas?

Have you tried with an Aruba branded SFP module?  Does the transceiver get recognized when you insert into G0/0/4 or G0/0/5?  The module you are using just may not work in the SFP+ ports.

Yes the transceiver is recognised. We don't have any Aruba branded ones but are using the same Cisco ones in other SFP+ ports.

I have just noticed though that the port configurations are not shown in the CLI running config on our controllers that are running OS 8.10.0.6. They are shown however on our controllers that are running 8.6.0.21 so maybe that is part of the problem?

    8.10 controller:

    [MDC] #show running-config | begin 0/0/0
    Building Configuration...
     [MDC] #

    8.6 Controller:

     [MDC] *#show running-config | begin 0/0/0
    Building Configuration...
    interface gigabitethernet 0/0/0
        description "GE0/0/0"

        trusted vlan 1-4094
        no poe.................

That's a bit odd looking to me.  You might be able to get TAC to take a look at this based on that output, but the lack of an Aruba branded SFP might be troublesome.

Stay with supported Aruba transceivers to avoid this kind of issues, see the Aruba gateway datasheets.

I think we switched to a copper SFP in the end as we were fortunate enough to be close to what we were connecting to. I do think it was an issue with the sfp rather than the port though.

we moved from 0/0/2 and 3 to 0/0/0 and 1, and the links came up, using the same SFPs.  My guess is there is a compatibility issue with 2 and 3 and these SFPs.  Its our lab environment so I am using 1G fiber finisar .  hoping tac has some ideas.
