    Posted Sep 28, 2023 03:02 AM

    Hello Community,

we are managing more than 100 APs with Aruba Central (EU Cloud) and got al lot of Alarms with message:

"Radio frames retry percent on 5 (also 2.4 GHz) Channel 60E has been above 90% for about 15 minutes since 2023-09-27 12:14:02 UTC on AP xyz"

APs are running AOS 10 (10.4.0.2) and we are using Auto Power and Auto Channel.

Please can someone explain what could be the reason for this?

What is the best way to troubleshoot this issue?

    Cheers Michael

60E means that you are running an 80mhz wide channel.  That provides the fastest transmit speed for clients that support it, but also the largest interference surface because of channel width and the limited number of 80mhz wide channels.  I would uncheck 80mhz wide channels to avoid the interference at your next maintenance window.

thx for your information - I'll check that, but I got same issue at 2.4GHz Band, where is no 80MHz-wide channel:

Radio frames retry percent on 2.4 GHz Channel 6 has been above 90% for about 15 minutes since 2023-09-29 06:54:02 UTC on AP xyz with 0 connected clients

    Settings 2.4GHz:

    I guess that's maybe a bug of AOS10 ...

The 2.4ghz band only has 3 channels in wifi and many non-wifi devices exist in that band, so it is possible that is the situation.  Is it actionable?  Maybe not, because most devices produced today support the 5ghz band which completely avoids that.  Many customers today don't even broadcast their wireless networks on the 2.4ghz band unless necessary.

Is this on specific APs? Or on all APs?

In what type of environments are these APs deployed? Is it high density? Or in a place with many neighbors that have WiFi deployed?

Could it be that there is a lot of RF interference in this place?

You may use spectrum analysis tools (external or built in to the AP) to get a better understanding of your RF Environment.

    Hi Rob,

    thx for your information.

Environment is "normal density" with around 15-20m distance between APs. No high amount of neigbors with autonom WiFi.

I can see the problem at a lot of different APs :

    I changed Channel Width to 20 / 40MHz - so no more 80 MHz.

Here you can see WiFi Power range:

I though that central is managing WiFI Setup with auto-power and auto-channel automatically!

    Cheers

    Michael

PS: I will check interference with Ekahau Tool.

    Question:

Do you have any issues with client performance?  The retries message could be erroneous (few frames generating a large percentage of retries).

    Hi Colin,

customer is not reporting any client issues. Which next troubleshooting steps do you suggest?

Customer can see Alarms and he's getting nervous.

    Should I contact support team?

    Cheers Mic

You could contact support, absolutely.  Ultimately, you might want to turn off the Alert if it is not accompanied by actionable consequences:  AP Alerts

    Arubanetworks remove preview
    AP Alerts
Aruba Central allows network administrators and users with admin permissions to configure alerts. For more information, see Configuring Alerts. To enable or disable all the access point alerts on a single click, you can use the Enable All or Disable All button respectively.
    View this on Arubanetworks >

EDIT:  This could be one of those cases, where this alert's thresholds are not actionable in isolation, or outside customer complaints.
