That's strange. I would advise you to open an Aruba TAC case to investigate this, or to help you reschedule the update.
Is this a standalone controller or a controller managed by a mobility conductor. My advice would be to update the mobility conductor first as this is also your license server.
You indicate that you have restored a backup to the old version, so we cannot ask you to share logging.
Your version is supported but my advice would be to only update production environments to a long support release (LSR) and that is 8.10.0.9 at the time of writing.

Subject: Unlicensed AP after controller firmware upgrade
Hi,
I tried to upgrade my Aruba controller 7205 firmware from 8.9 to 8.11 but after the successful upgrade, all AP becomes Unlicensed (L).
I tried to test 1 AP to preload 8.11 firmware then reboot it, but still the 8.11 AP (172.100.5.116) is Unlicensed. I checked the Licenses tab and the license is still there but no AP is using it.
I read the release notes of 8.11 before I upgrade and it is compatible with my controller 7205 and AP505, AP575.
I have no choice but to reboot the controller to my old firmware 8.9 and it works fine even in my AP505 with 8.11 firmware.
What could be the issue?
Thank you.
