If the VC is upgraded all of the other APs in the Instant swarm will pull the upgrade file from the VC if its the same model or running the same release of IAP code. You will see code names like Scorpio when looking for IAP code on the support site here: https://networkingsupport.hpe.com/downloads. If all the APs don't run the same release, at least one of each model would need to be upgraded in order to "seed" the upgrade file to the rest.
So long story short, if they are all the same model, you shouldn't have an issue.

Subject: Upgrading APs not licensed in Aruba Central
Hi Everyone,
I have to update some APs manage by Aruba central which just one of them is licensed, the one who acts as virtual controller.
We have only applied the license on the VC and other APs take config from it. We would like to know if anybody can answer what happens if we update the VC, others APs will receive the update too? We dont have anyway to test if this work and the APs are in production.
Thanks in advantege.
