  • 1.  Voip VLAN setup

    Hello,

    We have a Procurve 2530-48 PoE+ J9772A switch.

We want to setup 2 VLANs. 1 for the computer network and 1 for the Voip Phones.

The computer network and Voip phones are in the same IP range 192.168.1.0/24 beceause they need to talk together for the SoftPhone application.

All we want is a Voip VLAN that has Priority over the computer network.

Computers and phones can be connected to same port on the switch, Switchport > Phone > Computer.

I think the Phones should be tagged and the computers untaggend?

Can someone point me in the right direction?

    Thanks.

Have a look at page 6 on this HP document:

    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02642107.pdf

You use tagged and untagged vlan on the same port. The IP phone will use the tagged VLAN for itself and pass the untagged VLAN on to the computer connected to the second network port on the phone. The voice command is for QoS in the VoIP VLAN.

    Thank you.

If we set it up this way, will the Computer van Voip VLAN have access to each other? This is an requirement beceause of the softphone application.

    HI.

The IP telephone and computers will be in separate VLANs. If they can access each other depends on your network and firewall setup. Are they connected to a core switch that has routing between the VLANs?

    Hi,

This is the only switch we have. Is it possible to allow access from de voip Vlan to the computer Vlan and the other way arround?

Maybe it is easier to creat 1 Vlan and just give Voip Traffice higher priority? Is there way how this can be done?

To provide IP connectivity between two different subnets, you need a router.

Then we want to use 1 VLAN to keep it simple.

Can we just give the IP Phones en PBX High Priority with IP Precendence?

We will make DHCP reservation for every IP Phone and assign them High Priority. Will this work?

Your phones should be tagging their packets with an IP Precedence of 5. (HP use 6, for some weird reason).

Enabling QoS on your switches should ensure the voice packets are prioritised.
