WiredAP Client Limit on AP

    Hello community,

I configured an AP303H with enet1 wired port profile to do guest access with Clearpass captive portal. Everything works fine and as expected.

The customer connected a kind of "dumb" switch to that port and we successfully had 4 concurrent "guest" users authenticating with captive portal and also the usual guest mac caching flow works fine, if the client is connecting again.

Now question is about the concurrent client limit on that WiredAP port.

    - How many guest clients can connect concurrently" ?

On the Aruba switch with "user-based-tunneling", we can have 32 Clients / MAC accesses per port.

What is the limit on the AP303H and are there different limits on diffferent AP models?

I was not able to find anything in the docs regarding this limit and we did not have enough "test" clients to evaluate if there is also a limit of 32.

I'd appreciate any useful information or hints concerning this question.

    Many thanks and kind regards,

    Peter

I'm not aware of any practical limit with wired tunneled mode on one of the ethernet ports of your APs. I would not run high volumes of wired client tunneling on AP ports as that is not exactly what it has been designed for, but would not see where you would run into limits. Please note that each client will take a session on the controller which needs to be scaled properly for concurrent users.

    Hello Herman,

Thanks for your anser. I supposed there is a limit as there is one one the switches.

The customer typically sees 10-20 wired guest clients concurrently on this port and it seems to work.

    Hi all,

I'm reopening this thread in case someone has figured out the max number of wired clients of the AP-303H (per port and/or in total).

I had a bad experience with a competitor model (the Cisco Business 145AC) which has an undocumented limit of 4 clients in total when using ethernet ports. Fortunately, the AP-303H doesn't seem to have such a low limit, but it'd be useful to have the exact limit documented.. My personal need is to connect an unmanaged switch to the AP, with a number of IP cameras behind the switch (1 camera = 1 client).

    Cheers!

Repeating my previous answer: "I'm not aware of any practical limit with wired tunneled mode on one of the ethernet ports of your APs. As seen above, there are reports of 20 concurrent users without problems, which statement supports the above.

Also here you can see for the AP303 a recommendation of 30 clients per AP, and a practical limit (don't design over) of 50. I don't think there is a hard limit documented, except 256 per radio on that AP303, but as mentioned you should not go there.

It would help if you disclose what number you are looking for... if that is 100 or more, I won't even try with that AP, use a gateway (9004/7005) instead, if it's 25 I'm confident that it should work. Note that the design for RAPs and wired ports is more like a 3-5 wired devices, which is typical in a smaller remote office, where you don't run into this discussion.

For a hard statement, work with your Aruba partner, local Aruba team or TAC.

Thanks Herman, appreciate the detailed answer. For the moment, the number of devices would be around 10 (max 7 for a single port), so I don't expect any issues, but I may need to add more devices later on (more IP cameras or other home devices). If I buy the AP303H, I'll probably run a few tests and I'll share my observations on this thread.
