  • 1.  Wireless Card on a nx9005 laptop

    Posted Oct 16, 2003 01:14 PM
Me and my flatmate have both purchased compaq nx9005 laptops, and neither of us can get our wireless cards to work. I install the software for my USR 802.11g card, restart the computer as instructed and then insert the wireless card. Windows detects it, installs the drivers but then says "error code 10: device cannot start" My friend gets the same results with his DLink DWL-650 card. His card works on another friends laptop, which suggests the problem lies with the laptops not the wifi cards. Uninstalling then reinstalling does not work, and USR tech support came up with no suggestions beyond flashing the bios (which didn't work) and upgrading to XP service pack 1A (but microsoft do not recommend going from SP1 to 1A) Any ideas? Sorry if the answer is in a faq , but a ten minute search for something appropriate came up blank.

    Hi,
Good news is that you're not the only one : look at :
    http://forums1.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/bizsupport/parseCurl.do?CURL=%2Fcm%2FQuestionAnswer%2F1%2C%2C0xc4b8506d69a7d711abdc0090277a778c%2C00.html&forumId=2&admit=716493758+1066377305769+28353475

Try to download broadcom 802.11 adapters series drivers from hp site :
    http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqnk/us/locate/64_5600.html
It seems to correct an ionternal bug and work also with USR.

    Jerome,

Thanks for your reply but it doesn't seem to have worked. Last night, before you responded, the card started working although I can't work out why it did so. After rebooting, it went dead again.

Which order should I install the drivers in? I did Broadcom 802.11 Adapters Driver 1E, and restarted the laptop, Broadcom Network Adapters User Interface, restart, USR drivers from my CD, restart and insert wifi card, then windows installed the card and I got the same error. Is that OK? I now see that a new driver 1F has appeared, which I'm about to try, fingers crossed.

    Thanks again,

    Alasdair

I had a problem also with a WIFI card. This one was a Belkin 54g. It would not see the network router and i have since found out that you sometimes need to either boot up then insert the card, or slightly push or pull the card. It seems that the connection pins might be a bit on the thin side and give an intermittent connection. This might explain why your card suddenly worked for no apparent reason

I fixed this problem by unistalling the driver for the card, updating the bios to version 1.54 (see links below) then reinstalling the driver.

    WinFlash Version: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqnk/us/download/20116.html

    ROMPaq: http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/hpcpqnk/us/download/20117.html

I have fixed here by just installing the broadcom 802.11 adapters drivers.

    Thx
