Configure CPPM to monitor CPU load average and Disk space threshold to send Traps to a trap receiver

Mar 17, 2017 08:59 AM

Requirement:

Configure CPPM to monitor CPU load average and Disk space threshold to send Traps to a trap receiver.

Solution:

CPPM by default, monitors the free disk space as well as CPU load average threshold. When a trap receiver is configured, CPPM sends a trap, if the corresponding parameter exceeds the threshold.

Configuration:

1. Login to CPPM as Super administrator.

2. Navigate to Server Manager --> Server Configuration --> Service Parameters.

3. Select the service as System Monitor Service. It would list Free disk space threshold as well as 1/5/15 Minute CPU load average threshold parameter values.

When the available free space is below 30%, CPPM will send a trap to the trap receiver.

Likewise, when CPU load average thresholds of the server in the last 1 minute, 5 minute and 15 minutes can be specified. When load average exceeds the configured value, CPPM will send a trap to trap receiver.

To configure a trap receiver:

1. Navigate to Administration --> External Servers --> SNMP Trap Receivers.

2. Click Add to add a trap receiver.

Unlike SNMP monitoring,

1. Traps are one way communication from the device to trap destination at UDP port 162.

2. Traps are spontaneous and will reach destination as soon as they are generated.

3. Community string is not mandatory to receive the trap messages.

Verification

Testing for 1 Minute CPU load average with Airwave configured as a trap receiver in CPPM:

As shown in the above screenshot, set the 1 Minute CPU load average to 1. When the 1 minute CPU load average is more than 1(parameter value), CPPM would send a trap receiver.

Below is an example screenshot from trap receiver, when the 1 minute CPU load average is greater than 1.

Free disk space threshold and Free memory threshold can also be monitored under Cluster wide parameter settings, but that only sends an alert email, if messaging setup is configured under external servers.
