Cannot connect through VIA Android APP on mobile data

    Hello guys,

     

    I am reaching out to you because im encountering a weird issue.

     

    I have several Huawei P20 Lite on android 8.0.0.

    I have installed, through the play store VIA 3.1.1.

    I tested the issue on two different VIA architectures (one at my clients and one in my office) and got the same result.

     

    When i start the app and enter the VIA url i am offered to download a VIA profile, download it and then log in.

     

    The issue :

    When i am on the app's mainscreen where "VPN disconnected" is indicated if i try to connect : 

    - Connected to wifi (my phone's, my company's, another company's) : the VPN connects, no issues.

    - Connected to mobile data : it tries to connect and fails in half a second.

     

    I checked if VIA had sufficient permissions to access mobile data (it has), there is no proxy or port specified in its APN Profile.

     

    I tested both my via servers with my personnal phone (OnePlus 5T) and it works perfectly.

     

    Have you guys had this issue previously ?

    Are you allowing TCP 443  and UDP 4500 on your firewall from the public ip address to your controller?

    Yes,

     

    As i stated, it works if im using wifi (from home) on the Huawei or my own personnal phone (OnePlus 5T).

    Your description is confusing.

     

    Did you try it on any other platform like a Windows or Mac?

    Are you saying that it doesn't work on mobile data no matter what phone you select or it doesn't work on EITHER phone on mobile?

    Sorry if im being confusing :

     

    My issue is not on Windows, it works perfectly on them.

    My issue is with the Huawei P20 Lite (and Honor 8, that i know of) :

    - IF the phone is connected to wifi (a home wifi not company) and i try to connect the VPN, it works no issues.

     

    - IF the phone is connected on mobile data (4G/3G/...) and i try to connect the VPN, it does not work.

    I can access the VIA URL with a browser through mobile data without any issues.

     

    Those scenarios work without any issues on a OnePlus 5T.

    Is it the same mobile provider on phones that work and phones that do not work?

     

    I would:

    - Find out the public ip address of the phone

    - SSH into the controller that terminates VIA traffic

    - Initiate the Connection on the phone

    - Type "show datapath session table <public ip address of phone>" on the controller commandline to see if traffic is even being attempted.

    I have three SIM cards from different providers at my disposal, i tested all of them :

    - SIM 1 on Huawei : unconclusive

    - SIM 2 on Huawei : unconclusive

    - SIM 3 on Huawei : unconclusive

     

    -SIM 1 on OnePlus : conclusive

    -SIM 2 on OnePlus : conclusive

    -SIM 3 on OnePlus : conclusive

     

    As for the datapath session : 

    Its empty.

    If you click on the Gear in the upper left hand corner, there is a logs tab in the android app.

    Yes, 

     

    The logs only show :

     

    Starting VPN Connection

    VPN Connecting ...

    VPN Disconnecting ...

    VPN Disconnected 

     

    All those messages on the same second.

     

    When i turn off mobile data on the phone it behaves exactly the same. As if the app wasnt able to reach out.

     

    I tried other VPN apps and they work well.

    from the given details it looks like a known issue with VIA when VoLTE is enabled on the phone. We are working on this issue and the fix will be provided soon.

     

    Can you check and confirm this by disabling VoLTE on the problematic phone.

    It seems that the option is not available in the menus.

     

    It seems it will not enable & show up in the menus if the service provider hasn't enabled it on the sim card.

     

    Please see attached what i have on my phone and what it looks like when the service providers has enabled VoLTE.

    Edit : if i make a call with the huawei i drop from 4G+ to HSPA so i think it is not enabled.

    Hello,

    Yes, I've got the same problem. Aruba VIA VPN Client doesn't work on Huawei/Honor phones. I've tried many phones and It seems that aruba app can't get access to mobile data. On Wifi connection everything works fine. On others phone manufacturers problem doesn't accure. 

    VIA VPN Client logs in attachment.

    Hey,

     

    Aruba support got back to me saying that the lastest version of VIA on Android fixed the issue.

     

    It did.

     

    Check the version"s 3.1.2 release notes.

    Hi,

     

    I am describing above problem based on VIA 3.1.2 (the newest version from google play).

    My Huawei phone also hasn't got VoLTE support. In my previous post I attached logs from failed connections - IMHO it's selinux related problem.

    Hi all, it seem like iOS 13 is also having this issue of the current app version is not able to support VoLTE.

     

    Can Aruba TAC look into this and update the app?

    Can you please open a TAC case, so that your environment can be captured and replicated. We would want to know if you are experiencing the same thing, or something new.

    Hello,

     

    Three months ago I opened TAC case. After investigation the problem has been resolved - From backend team I got improved VIA Client based on 3.1.3 version, which is able to connect via mobile date. The support team promised that this fix will be included in future release. Version 3.1.4 has been released but It seems to not include the fix. I hope that patch will be merged to 3.1.5.

    Any update on this? My Samsung Note 10+ is suffering the same thing it seems. If I'm on WiFi, everything connects fine. If I'm on data it rapidly connects/disconnects. (This is tested on local WLAN, not a remote site)

     

    I have a packet trace going on my firewall, and I don't even see the connection attempt coming though while on LTE. The VIA profile is downloaded without issue, though.

     

    I'm not sure where the logs are on the Android device, or if they would help.

     

    VIA version 3.1.4
