How to support roaming on AirMesh platform?
AirMesh has two working modes.
The first mode is the VPLM mode. VPLM stands for Virtual Private LAN over Mesh. In this mode, AirMesh products essentially run Layer3 routing inside the Mesh, but use Layer2 interfaces, either VLAN or bridge, to connect to wired networks. In other words, VPLM provides Layer2 overlay services over Layer3 routing. As a result, the mesh network can connect to wired networks or external devices in the easy plug-in-and-play Layer2 fashion while still runs Layer3 routing inside the mesh core and retains all Layer3 advantages such as scalability, fast convergence, and multiple concurrent gateways.
VPLM mode is the default mode in AirMesh products. Roaming is automatically supported in this mode. There is no need for any extra configuration to enable roaming when AirMesh products work in the VPLM mode.
The second mode is the pure Layer3 mode. In this mode, AirMesh products essentially use Layer3 interfaces, either static route or OSPF, to connect to wired networks. In other words, in the Layer3 mode, the Mesh networks expect the wird networks are Layer3 capable, not just bridge or VLAN. Motrix, the AirMesh Layer3 mobility module, is required to be enabled to support roaming in this mode. You can find how to enable and configure Motrix in the AirMesh User Guide. In most cases, what you need to do is simply turn on the Motrix service.
AirMesh supports cross IP subnet roaming in both VPLM and Layer3 modes.
