Q:

What is CDE feature on Aruba 70xx Branch Office Controller. How does it help branch office deployments?

A:

Aruba 70xx series of Branch Office Controllers (BOC), come with hardware based Compression and Decompression Engine (CDE)  that works on compressing IPSEC traffic towards the Master Controller.

The 72xx mobility controllers, that are deployed in head office or data center, come with 4 compression and decompression engines. Whereas, 70xx controllers deployed at branch come come with 2 CDE’s.

By default, compression is disabled. When enabled, the compression algorithms compress the inner payload and any GRE tunnel that it goes into ipsec tunnel. The compression is done before putting the packet inside an IPSEC tunnel and the decompression is done after getting the packet out of the IPSEC tunnel.

Navigate using the below steps to enable WAN Optimization in the Smart Config on Master controller:

1. Once you login to Master controller, click on "Configuration" tab.

2. In the bottom of left-pane, under Branch, click on "Smart Config"

3. Select "WAN" tab

4. Select "Enable" for "Compression" under WAN Optimization. As shown below:
