What is the traffic management profile and its potential conflict with WMM?

Product and Software: This article applies to all Aruba controllers and ArubaOS version 3.3.1.x and later.

The traffic management profile allows the Aruba controller administrator to allocate to SSIDs.

The bw-alloc parameter of a traffic management profile allows the setting of the minimum bandwidth to be allocated to a virtual AP profile when the wireless network is congested.

However, this feature could potentially affect WMM traffic through the same SSID during congestion.

Even when bw-alloc is set to 100% for one SSID, if the traffic exceeds the AP capability, the AP discards packets irrespective of their access category.

Such behavior conflicts with WMM where the AP is supposed to favor voice and video at the expense of background (BK) and best effort (BE) traffic.

To regain the expected WMM behavior, it is advisable to disable traffic management, because both schemes would be conflicting with each other.
