IAP-215's wont join existing VC

    I have an existing VC with 17 IAP-135's on it.  It's been working fine for a year or more.  I upgraded it to 6.4.2.6-4.1.1.7_50209 to ensure it would support the new IAP-215's I was going to add.

     

    Unfortunately, none of the 215's will join the controller.  The best I can tell, the problem is some sort of image mismatch.  I have completed this exact process at another site and all the 215's came online to the VC without issue.  Running same version and everyhing.  Below is the log.

    I sent you the 4.1.1.7 image for the AP215.  Try upgrading it individually, first and then try to join it to the cluster.

    Here is the new problem.  I SSH to one of the 215's and immediately get the following message:

     

    Warning: CLI module is running in a degraded state. Configuration, write memory, and support command are disabled; please debug with caution.

     

    So I try the upgrade-image tftp://X.X.X.X/imagename you sent me

    I get the following message but it never does anything. I monitor the TFTP server and you can see that the AP never even requests a file or connects to it.

    Upgrading swarm image. Will automatically reboot when done.

     

    Any ideas?

     

    Not sure if this helps, but I can actually shut down all the existing 135's and the new 215's will form their own VC that I can manage.  Of course the 135's wont connect to it when I boot them back up. But I do have the ability to get the 215's working in their own VC or the 135's working in their own VC.  Just not both.

    I recently had a similar issue with a single 215 not joining the VC after all 215 APs were upgraded to 6.4.2.6-4.1.1.8_50989.  I also had the message, "CLI module is running in a degraded state."  So, I couldn't upgrade the firmware from the CLI.  Also, I couldn't access the GUI so I couldn't upgrade the firmware that way either.

     

    The CLI would allow me to revert to the previous version on the other partition, so I used the following command to switch boot partitions and reboot:

    switch-partition-reboot

     

    While the AP was rebooting, I changed the switchport to an isolated VLAN.  While in isolation, I could access the GUI and successfully upgrade to 6.4.2.6-4.1.1.8_50989.  After the reboot, I cleared the config and moved it back to the original VLAN.  It then successfully joined the virtual controller.

    Hi Joseph,

     

    I'm new to Aruba, do you mind if you could send me the link steps/howto upgrade the AP (e.g. IAP-105) individually? As I was having the same problem that IAP device was NOT joining or NOT showing in existing VC (though for the past months with the same model IAP-105, it was successfully joined without issue except for this time).

     

    I was guessing that it might the software version as the existing were running ArubaOS (MODEL: 105), Version 6.4.2.6-4.1.3.0 and this new IAP is version-6.3.1.4-4.0.0.6_44126. Below is some log output taken via show log system, as shown below:

    You can disable auto-join on the cluster and

    (1) Individually Upgrade or downgrade the newest AP to the image of the cluster or

    (2) Individually Upgrade or downgrade the cluster to the version of the newest AP

     

    then

    Turn off autojoin and try to add that AP to the cluster.  This could be an issue with older firmware.

I've already downloaded below software (as per of your reply on this post - https://community.arubanetworks.com/t5/Controllerless-Networks/IAP-Firmware/m-p/286188)  BUT not sure if this would work with the current version 6.4.2.6-4.1.3.0_54915 of the cluster.

    To upgrade/downgrade the image, you need to go to maintenence> Firmware and upload the file.

     

    The images must match for the AP to join the cluster successfully, so the one I pointed to will not work.  Let me PM you some information.

    Hi Friend,

     

    It is expected issue because, both IAP 135 and IAP 215 are of two different hardware, IAP 135 is a Cassiopeia and IAP 215 is a Centaurus hence they can not join the cluster due to Image mismatch. there are two ways to get it done,

    1. Configure Airwave to push the image so that the IAP 215 will download the required Image and join the cluster 

    2. Upgrade the IAP 215 with the same Image as IAP 135 and join the cluster.

     

    Please feel free for any further help on this.
