What are the different factory reset options for an IAP?

    Hi,

We're used to working with Ruckus and factory defaulting here is dead easy (GUI, reset button or CLI). On an Aruba however, we haven't really found a straight forward solution to factory default an IAP. Also checking if the AP is factory reset seems tricky ...

Could anyone help us out with a bit more information?

    Kind regards,

    Tom

So CLI and button reset are the only 2 options you have to factory reset an Aruba AP? Is there a way, besides CLI to verify it's been factory reset?

It should broadcast the "Instant" SSID when it comes up.  Is that what you mean?

Oh .. because when we factory reset the IAP, we often see the 2.4 and 5 bands highlighted orange, but nothing else happening. Are we missing something here?

Do you have access to the console output?  What model IAP is this?

    Yes, it's an IAP205.

How long do you allow for it to boot up?

You should turn it off, hold a paperclip in the reset button, put power to it for 10 seconds and then relese.

It should take about 3 to 5 minutes for the instant SSID to show up and the a/b/g lights should turn green.

That's what we do. We insert a paperclip, power on the AP, wait 10 seconds and let it boot for a couple of minutes. Then the 2.4 and 5 bands turn orange and remain orange. We've had this on a couple of IAP 205.

Is it still connected to the same network with the other IAPs at this point?

No, it's just an IAP on its own (that's how it was used as demo as well).

Are you booting it up on a network that has DHCP and access to the internet?  If yes, can you please provide the bootup output from the console?

No, just letting it boot on its own, not connected to any network or device.

Here is what I do to factory reset on an IAP. I connect a console cable to it and then power up the IAP on a isolated VLAN without DHCP. Shortly after it starts to boot hit the <Enter> key to get into apboot mode. Once in apboot mode run the following commands:

    apboot> factory_reset

    apboot> purgenv

    apboot> save

    apboot> boot

The IAP will now be factory reset.

I guess I'll start doing the same, don't trust the reset button that much.

So once you perform those commands will the Instant SSID appear instantly or do I need to do something else to check?
