We have just turned on the guest network for our students and staff using captive portal it has just an accept button (user name and e-mail are generic and hard coded into the web)  This system works great for all of the devicies initaly even ipads.  The problem we are having is once the ipad goes to sleep it is not reconnecting to the guest network like all of the other devices do.

Apple has a TID that talkes about the video brightness this seems to help in some cases and not in others. Has any one else found a sollution to this?

So the iPad connects to the guest SSID gets the captive portal splash screen clicks accept and then is able to work just fine they close the cover go to there next class come back an hour latter and it just sits there trying to connect over and over again.  We have 1024 IP's per guest scope and this has happened even in testing when there where only 4 devices on the guest network.

iPhones Android Mac PC and everything else you can think of wakes up right away with no problems it is just ipads Gen 1 2 and 3 ios 4 and 5

    Aruba controller is running 6.1.3.1

    Thanks

I would start to debug this by turning on debugging for that mac address (logging level debug user-debug <mac addr>).  Then, force the issue to occur and see what is in the "show log user-debug all" command.  Also, check the "show auth-tracebuf" command (note the time stamp).

If I'm reading this correctly, you are seeing a known iPad issue.  We've run into this on each of our network types (.1x, wpa-psk and open).  There are several ways to correct the problem but no known way to prevent it completely.  Disable/enable the wireless, forget this network or reboot the iPad.

If you do a google/yahoo search, you'll find plenty of others have this issue.  It was worse with 4.x  than 5.x but it does still happen.

Yes we where just hoping some one else had encountered this problem and found a sollution as we have about 14,000 students who will be using the guest network.

We have found through testing no "apple" fix works twice some times rebooting the ipad works some times truning wifi off and on some times icnreasing the brightnetss.  If we move it to a WPA encrypted network this works every time.

Our devices secured with WPA work perfectly every time no sleep issue the same with open networks that do not have the captive portal screen.  We are working with our lawyers to find out what risk we have to not having the splash screen but so far its not looking good.  Our administrators will not allow us to do anything beyond a simple accept because it "interfears with the educational processes"  So doing any form of self registering with a certificate is killed.

Being in the education arena myself, I feel your pain.  The WPA situation seems like something we might look into for the future.  Fortunately, our love affair with the iPad is still in the infancy stage with most of our devices being in the hands of adults... at least for the near future.  They don't even know what they want to do with the iPad, only that they want them.

I'll post anything I find to help out.

We were too having the same issue. It turned out that we did not have a dhcp-acl under guest/authenticated role. When a user who has a session on controller but gone to sleep just as iPad and all other device will do at any stage, it will not come up again and keep on trying to connect to network. We had a dhcp-acl (which allows dhcp query to dhcp server) under logon role but once user is authenticated somehow we missed dhcp-acl to be added. You might be having the same issue. We had same issue and it got solved after allowing dhcp request under guest role.

    Hope this helps.
