3810M Switch for SAN and NAS

    We are configuring an Aruba 3810M, 16 SFP+ port switch with a 4 port 10 GbE module installed. We had purchased the module with the intention of setting up the SAN and NAS on the same server. We are being told by a Consulting firm we are working with that the traffic for the SAN and NAS needs to be separated onto separate switches.

     

    Could someone provide more insight into this?

    Did the consultant provide any specific reasoning on why they recommend using separate switches? If the concern is keeping SAN and NAS traffic separate, VLANs can be used for that purpose. 

     

    If you could provide more detail on the proposed topology/solution, that would help us to provide more specific recommendations.

    I think for "historic" best pratice about iSCSI... :-D

    It all boils down on how they planned to deploy their "SAN"...FibreChannel 8G/16G? FibreChannel over Ethernet (10G)? just Ethernet (10G) with iSCSI? Really hard to tell why their consulting firm told them that without knowing exactly how they designed their SAN...using a dedicated FC Switch(es) doesn't necessarily mean there are old design concepts driving a SAN deployment...it all boils down on what you have and what you want to achieve...if there are just a NAS and Servers with 10G Ethernet ports and iSCSI is good enough for them...the Aruba 3810M they planned to use could fit the bill.
