Aruba 2930F Trunk – 1 GB Copper 10 GB Fiber

Hello

We have two connections between two facilities. One is connected with 1 GB Copper and the other one using 10 GB Fiber.

Is it possible to create a trunk of those two connections that we would have 11 GB in total?

Or if we create a trunk would it limit the 10 GB connection to 1 GB, resulting in a total of only 2 GB?

What would be the alternative? Using STP?

Hi,

 

only ports with equal speed and duplex values will work together.

 

Not sure about ASOS Switches like 2930F. Comware and others allow configuration of different type of links in one Aggregation. But the port which is up first determins which other ports may get active.

 

So you would have a random port speed setting resulting in 10 Gbit/s or 1 Gbit/s depending on who comes up first. No summation or limiting. Just one of your two links is active.

 

As a result: you should choose STP for redundancy.

1. Interfaces must be at same speed on all interfaces in the trunk.

2. The 10Gb link isnt downwards compatible. 10Gb can only negotiate at 10Gb.

3. STP networks are not recommened those days.

4. Use 2x10Gb or 2x1Gb on your trunk or dont create a trunk at all.

Just an idea: why not using the fastest link (10G) between your two sites as the main active link and leave the slowest one (1G) as the backup link?

 

I think with STP priority you can manage that...or try to see if (old) HP Smart Link approach (Master/Slave ports) could be adapted to your scenario.

 

I recall I've discussed (theoretically only) a HP Smart Link case here three years ago but I had no evidence it ever worked...still I'm not totally sure it can be applied on a scenario where there are just two switches involved (1:1) among which one want an active and a backup link for a group of VLANs.

 

Probably the STP approach is still be the best one IMHO...one link up the other blocked (no bandwidth aggregation but a minimum of resiliency in case the forwarding link will go down).

Hi

 

Maybe you can use bidir optics over the fiber link to create 2x10Gbit is there isn't enough fiber.

 

Use STP only as a last option.
