Aruba 5400R/2930M Switch - DHCP Server Port-Based Address Allocation

Hi All,

A quick question:

Could we configure an Aruba switch DHCP Server Port-Based Address Allocation?

For instance, we have a printer connected to Port A1 with IP Address of 192.168.1.10. If the printer gets faulty and we change it, we would like the new printer to get the same IP Address on that port.

Thanks.

Don't think that is possible as DHCP typically spans across multiple switches and the DHCP server doesn't see from which port the request is sent (for sure if the DHCP is running on another switch).

If you need the same IP assigned each time for a specific device like a printer, most people create a reservation in the DHCP server. If you change the device and want the IP to remain the same, you will need to change the reservation.

Another, not so clean, alternative is to create a dedicated subnet for such devices. This solution does not really scale.

If this is really a requirement you can also take a look into DHCP option 82. The switches could add additional information into the DHCP request.

However, you need a DHCP server that support this and the Aruba switches don’t this.

So they can add the option 82 information but can’t act on this as a DHCP server

Thanks guys for the response.

Cisco has this feature available, was wondering if Aruba has it too.

Looks like Windows supports this, but I think the configuration is a little bit complex.
