BGP Basic Configuration Steps

Requirement:

Configuring BGP within two devices ( can be iBGP or eBGP ) 



Solution:
  1. Define local AS 
  2. Define neighbor ip address and AS number
  3. If forming eBGP for indirectly connected devices then enable ebgp-multihop (optional to be use only for ebgp configuration)
  4. When forming neighbor relationship with device loopback address, enable update-source (optional)
  5. Apply next host address while advertising route to specific neighbor (optional)
  6. Network to be introduce in bgp protocol or as bgp route.
  7. Enable bgp , to start bgp process (compulsory before it form neighbor relationship)


Configuration:

Switch 1

  1. Switch(config) # Router bgp ( AS)
  2. Switch( bgp)# neighbor <ip address> remote-as (AS)  
  3. Switch( bgp)# neighbor <ip address> ebgp-multihop [2-255]  
  4. Switch( bgp)# neighbor <ip address> update-source <local loopback ip address >  
  5. Switch( bgp)# neighbor <ip address> next-hop-self  
  6. Switch( bgp)#  network <network ip address/prefixlength>
  7. Switch( config)# router bgp (AS) ENABLE 
     

Switch 2

  1. Switch2(config) # Router bgp ( AS)
  2. Switch2( bgp)# neighbor <ip address> remote-as (AS)  
  3. Switch2( bgp)# neighbor <ip address> ebgp-multihop [2-255]  
  4. Switch2( bgp)# neighbor <ip address> update-source <local loopback ip address >  
  5. Switch2( bgp)# neighbor <ip address> next-hop-self  
  6. Switch2( bgp)#  network <network ip address/prefixlength>
  7. Switch2( config)# router bgp (AS) ENABLE
     


Verification

Use the below commands

show ip bgp 

show ip route

show ip bgp summary
