Just bought a S2500. Can you password protect the console port as you used to with line console on Cisco?

    Thanks!!

Console uses the same local user database or TACACS that SSH does.

The mgmt-user password sets the password for the GUI and SSH.

I do not get challenged when I use the console port. If it were not for the enable password, I would have full access.

    Mark,

Can you send a screen capture of that as well as your configuration. I have never seen that and am consoled into several MAS's right now.

    Best regards,

The attached screen is what I see as soon as I connect to the console. No challenge, I simple enable, enter enable password, and drive on. I don't mind sending the config but I may have to wait until tomorrow for that. This is the second or third switch I've work with and they have all been the same out of the box.

This may be a long shot but try logging out of the switch console

Disconnect and the reconnect console and see if you're prompted for the password.

It may just be that someone was previously consoled in and didn't log out

    That was exactly the case.

Is there a way to set a timeout so if someone forgets to logout, it will be done automatically?

    Thanks for everyones help,

    Mark,

You can use "loginsession timeout X" to adjust the timout. By default it is set to 15 minutes. I just double checked on a switch and set it to 1 minute and verified that the user gets kicked out after 1 minute of inactivity.

    Best regards,

    Mark,

The console port is always protected by a username/password set. There is actually no way to disable that. The credentials are pulled from the "mgmt-user" accounts.
