Is is possible to create an LACP (802.3ad) aggregation group with 4 ports: 2 are 10GE-SR transceivers and 2 are 10GE-LR, each transceiver on a different line card in the Aruba 5406R Switch?

What about if the 4 transceivers (2 10GE-SR transceivers and 2 10GE-LR) are deployed in an Aruba 2930F/2930M uplink ports?

    Thanks in advance

Yes, (not ideal but) it should work since IEEE 802.3ad requires same speed and duplex settings on each member interface. Usage of a mix of SR and LR SFP+ Transceivers should not be an issue since both refer to the same media type.

    Hi Parnassus,

Thanks for your answer. By the way, have you tried this configuration in the field, with real equipments?

    Regards

Hi, no...I've not. All our aggregated ports use the same SR (if Fiber Optic) SFP or SFP+ Transceivers, not a mix of SR and LR (it's unusual to use LR transceivers with SR ones...).

    Hi Parnassus.

    My scenario is:

    Building 1:

    01 5406R core switch 1

    05 2930M distibution switches

    Building 2:

    01 5406R core switch 2

    08 2930M distibution switches

Both buildings are 2 kms far away

We want to virtualize both 5406R switches so that they can bee seen as one virtual chassis.

Each distribution switch is connected locally to its core switch via 10GE-SR but we want redundancy towards the second remote core 5406R switch. Because of distance, we would have to deploy 10GE-LR transceivers. And to avoid spanning tree, we need to aggregate 10GE-SR and LR ports.

Not a common scenario, but as you can see, It could be possible.

    Regards

OK, that scenario should be totally possible: on each Access Switch (I presume your Aruba 2930M Switches - on each sites - aren't part of any backplane stack) there will be a LAG made of one SR plus one LR, the SR goes to the local VSF Member 1, the LR goes to the remote VSF Member 2. The same, in terms of transceivers, should be planned on VSF Members (downlink to Local via SR, downlink to remote via LR). Between VSF Members two or more LR (SFP+).

The whole scenario will require (at least) n VSF LR SFP+ links between VSF Members plus 5 LR links from the group of 5 Switches on one side (if each one has a leg of its LAG) plus other 8 LR links from the group of 8 Switch on the other side...so a grand total of 13 FO links between two sites just for LAGs plus n additionals FO links for VSF ports.

Each VSF Member thus should use, respectively, 5 and 8 SR SFP (or SFP+) links to its Access Switches' group.

Yeap, that is what we have in mind.
Has anybody tried this LAG configuration on the field in some scenario?
