MSTP configuration - Aruba 5400 and 2930M switches

Hi,

Just having a cofusion about MSTP VLAN instance mapping between core (5400 series) and access switch (2930M).

MSTP VLAN instance mapping is configured on the core switch:

- spanning-tree instance 1 vlan 10-31 240 999 2201

MSTP VLAN instance mapping is configured on the access switch:

- spanning-tree instance 1 vlan 10-31 999 2201

There is only one region configured and both switches are in region - 1. However, as you can see the VLAN instance mapping is different. Also, VLAN 240 is not in use on the access switch.

We use the VLAN mapping to tell specific VLAN who is a root switch and if there are multiple regions then load balance can achieve. However, when the VLAN not in use and just configured in the switch and there is only one VLAN instance is running for all VLANs, in that case, do we still need to specify all VLANs regardless of use or not use in "spanning-tree instance 1 vlan " command? Please advise.

Thank you.
