    Dear Aruba friends,

Which steps are necessary to activate PTP on 2930M?

My Aruba 2930M JL323A  fails to activate PTP, e.g.:

    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(eth-1-48)# show ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(eth-1-48)# ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(eth-1-48)#

    Software versions:

    • Software revision: WC.16.07.0003
    • ROM Version : WC.17.02.0006

I have the impression that PTP support is missing on my Aruba device.

    Kind regards,

    Martin

Is your Aruba 2930M JL323A part of a Backplane Stack? try to perform the ptp command at global level (config), not inside an interface range context...what happen?

    Hello parnassus,

The PTP commands on config level doesn't show good results.  Here is the output at config level:

    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP# show ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP# ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP# config
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)# show ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)# ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)#

My Arauba switch is only connected via twisted pair Ethernet cable to my computer.  It is not connected to any other switch.  It is not part of a backplane stack.  On the rear side,   a module named JL083a is  inserted.  Do you think that this module prevents PTP or should this module be harmless to PTP?

    Kind regards,

    Martin

Would be interesting to know if without the JL083A module installed you will be able to finally enable PTP globally by using the ptp enable command indeed Management and Configuration Guide reports this statement: "IEEE 1588 end-to-end transparent mode cannot be enabled when there are flexible modules or transceiver ports in the system that do not support IEEE 1588" plus other specific restrictions.PTP.png

    Hello parnassus,

If the JL083A module is removed,  the PTP commands still fail.  See output below:

    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP# ptp enable
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP# show
    Incomplete input: show
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP# show ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP# config
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)# ptp enable
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)# show ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)# exit
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP# config
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)# interface 9
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(eth-9)# ptp enable
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(eth-9)# show ptp
    Invalid input: ptp
    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(eth-9)#

Is there any command to check if PTP support is available at all on my device or is the SW version the only hint?

    Cheers,

    Martin

Maybe the following output is helpful:

What's about removing the Module and reboot the switch? check if, once physically removed, its reference disappears from running configuration...if not you need to remove it manually from running configuration. Last resort is also give the update a try.

    Hi parnassus,

I removed the module and rebooted the switch but no success.

Would you mind telling me the command name for removing the module reference?

Another thing:  Is it mandatory to have spanning tree enabled in order to have PTP working or does PTP should work without STP?  I don't connect my switch to another switch.

    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)# show spanning-tree

     Multiple Spanning Tree (MST) Information

      STP Enabled : No

    Aruba-2930M-40G-8SR-PoEP(config)#

Directions for removing the flexible uplink module can be found in the Installation Guide (p66):

    https://h20628.www2.hp.com/km-ext/kmcsdirect/emr_na-a00015161en_us-4.pdf

You need to run the command:

    "flexible-module A remove"

    Up !

I know that this topic is nearly 5 years old but I have concerns about PTP on the 2930M. I work on a network design as presales and we plan to use 2930M switches in a PTP transparent environment.

    However the datasheet states : "IEEE 1588v2 (PTP) is not supported on the following 2930M models: JL323A, JL324A, R0M67A, R0M68A or 2930M modules: JL325A, JL078A, JL081A, JL083A"

but I need 10gig uplinks. as far as I know of the JL083A is the only module providing 10G uplinks. But according to the discussion above it seems that if i don't use macsec (we don't need it) it would work ?

I suppose it's just about timestamping and computing the residence time within the switch, what is the current status with the latest firmware about the PTP support on the 2930M product line and 10G uplinks ? We plan to use 24 and 48 ports 1G switches for the access ports.

    Thanks
