5Ghz roaming issues

    Hi all,

    After the survey, the conclusion was that our 2.4Ghz band on the office was unusable. So the goal is trying to connect as many of the clients to 5Ghz. When roaming we got sometime the issue that the client falls back to 2.4Ghz.

    The setup: 2 x 7010 Aruba controller + MM, 315 series AP's. ArubaOS 8.3.

    The configuration that I already tried:

    * Enabling 802.11 r/k/v;

    * Enabling ClientMatch/AirMatch;

    * Band steering: Force 5Ghz.

    Anybody else got some ideas? Was thinking about raising the minimum power level on 5Ghz?

    Thanks in advance!

    Kind regards,

    Thomas Willems

    ClientMatch has superseded Band Steering since ArubaOS 6.3, so enabling bandsteering will not do anything.

    The most powerful thing you can do in ArubaOS 8.3 to affect the behavior of clients choosing the 5ghz band is to make the transmit power  range of the access point higher in the 5ghz radio profile than in the 2.4ghz radio profile.  As an aside, ARM is also not used in ArubaOS 8.x when an MM is involved, so do not bother setting the ARM min or max TX power in the ARM profile.

    Joseph,

    When I started troubleshooting, our clients where about 120 on 2.4Ghz & 20 on 5Ghz.

    When enabling Band steering to Force 5Ghz, it changed to 33 on 2.4Ghz & the rest on 5Ghz?

    Client Match was enabled from the beginning.

    Where can I change the transmit power then?

    Kind regards,

    In the 5ghz radio profile.

    I've lowered 2.4Ghz from max 12 to max 9.

    5Ghz is from 15 to 21.

    Lets see what the result is.

    Clients still roam to 2.4Ghz, we are going to try to reposition the AP to have LOS.

    Kind regards,

    Choose one access point. Is the 5ghz transmit power higher than the 2.4ghz transmit power?

    5Ghz power is highter then 2.4Ghz.

    Same issues here.

    5 Ghz users are fine.

    Clients sometimes roam to 2.4 Ghz and randomly, some of them are painfully slow with a lot of retried and/or dropped frames.

    Users on the 5 Ghz bands have practically no fram issues.

    I'm trying to play with the radio power, as well.

    What is your transmit power range for the 2.4 GHz radio?
    What is your power range for the 5ghz radio?

    Typically the 5ghz range should be at least 6 more than the 2.4gjz to be effective.
