AP 555 in restricted mode.

    Posted Aug 13, 2019 06:14 PM

Hi community I'm testing a new AP 555, I have a virtual controller and a 3810 switch to connect the AP, the problem is that the AP boots and it is provisioned well but the System LED status is in Amber - Solid which means that the AP is in "restricted power mode (limited PoE power available, or IPM restrictions applied), no network restriction" (based on the installation guide).

I have tried to power the AP with a PoE-AT injector but it remains on the same status.

There you have the ouput of system-status command:

    Power Status
    ------------
    Item Value

The 555 needs 802.3bt to run without restrictions

edit:  When powered by DC, 802.3bt (class 5) POE or 2x 802.3at
(class 4) POE, the AP will operate without restrictions

    Thanks to you all!

It's clear now. I forgot to check the data sheet (my bad)

Hyjack of this thread but I think this should go together with this; how do I get the 2nd 5ghz radio enabled and/or visible?

Running code 8.5.0.2: MM with 7200 series cluster

AP-555 is not in restricted mode; no "p" flag. On 802.3at PoE+

IPM is enabled (order power off usb, eth1, g radio)

    both LED are green.

    lates DRT file activated

LLDP enabled and power handed out by LLDP

connected 2 ports in aggregation (disabling 1 port didn't work on 2930F with code16.06.006)

both show ap active and sho ap bssid only shows 1 a and 1 g radio. Disabling the g radio doesn't make a difference. SSID scanner shows single 5Ghz channel with SSID

Same AP Group has 345 enabled in Dual 5Ghz mod

    thanks

    Erik

The mode where the AP-555 splits up the 8x8 radio into two independent 4x4 5GHz radios will be supported in 8.6 code only.

    In 8.5, it's a fixed 8x8 radio.

Thanks Onno, I wasn't aware of that. Is there an ETA on 8.6 that may be communicated?

Not the right forum for roadmap info, but Q4CY19 is vague enough ;-)

    Couple things:

    1. Did you update the DRT table?
    https://www.arubanetworks.com/techdocs/DRT/Content/ReleaseNotes/Upgrade/DownloadableRegulatoryTable.htm

    2. Enable LLDP on the switch ports

    3. Plug two cables into it. Disable the second port on the switch, but leave the PoE on.

That will give it enough power to run without restrictions.

As an alternative you could enable IPM, which will operate the AP without restrictions (initially) even when using a single 802.3at POE source. However, IPM may quickly apply restrictions as the AP starts handling traffic, to ensure the AP does not exceed the POE budget.

You could configure the AP to minimize power consumption, or wait for IPM to kick in and apply restrictions (as configured).

@onno Thank you for the info. I tried it on an AP-555, aswell. The second radio is still offline, when "Split 5GHz mode" is enabled. Is there anything else what I have to enable or disable?

    It´s already 8.7.1

    So, what did I do:

    configure

    ipm

     enable

     ipm-power-reduction-step-prio ipm-step disable_alt_eth priority 5

     ipm-power-reduction-step-prio ipm-step disable_usb priority 6

     ipm-power-reduction-step-prio ipm-step radio_5ghz_power_3dB priority 11

    end

    commit apply

    wri mem

    After Reboot:

    Update 2

    I enabled ap-poe-power-optimization enable
    ap-poe-power-optimization enable
    commit apply

    => No change

    Update 3

Within the GUI => Configuration => Access Points I selected the access points and edited it, went to "Radio" and set "Split 5GHz mode" to "Default" while the manual settings for all 3 radios were still active. (It was set to "Enabled" before.)

Now the 2nd 5 GHz radio (Radio 2) is active!

    Update 4

After rebooting the access point radio 2 is offline again.

    Update 5

    Again:
    ap-poe-power-optimization enable
    commit apply
    wri mem

    => No change

    Update 6

Within the GUI => Configuration => Access Points I selected the access points and edited it, went to "Radio" and changed TX power from 18.0 to 17.0 dBm. No error message about e.g. split 5 GHz mode.

Now the 2nd 5 GHz radio (Radio 2) is immediately active again!

    Update 7

After rebooting the access point radio 2 is offline again.

    So what am I missing?

    I'm at a loss.

It should not matter (since you only use one POE source) but you may want to try changing the POE mode from Shared to Failover.

I forgot to mention that this AP-555 belongs to an IAP cluster containing AP-535 and AP-555 access point. Som AP-555 are configured to use 2 uplink ports, i.e. they use 2x 802.3at. But this particular AP-555 uses only one uplink port with 1x 802.3at.

After factory resetting the affected AP-555 it shows
    ------------
    2.5.3.10 (74666)

    Power Status
    ------------

Eth0 HW POE status : POE AT, LLDP power: 25.5W
Eth1 HW POE status : NONE, LLDP power: 0.0W
    POE Mode : Shared

This AP-555 was actually master before resetting it. Now it is slave and uses 1x 5 GHz radio.

Another AP-555 which has 2 uplink ports (with bonding of course) activated with 802.3at shows

    Power Status
    ------------
    Item Value
    ---- -----
    Power Supply : POE-BT
LLDP Power : Successfully negotiated at 39.2W

Eth0 HW POE status : POE AF, LLDP power: 25.5W
Eth1 HW POE status : POE AF, LLDP power: 25.5W
    POE Mode : Shared

How can I actually change the "POE Mode" from "Shared" to "Failover" of the first AP-555 without affecting the other ones? Using ssh to connect to the first AP-555, it says
    configure
WARNING: CLI is not supported on slave.

Well, of course it is slave...
